Type material

Remarks

The type specimen of P. primata J. L. Barnard, 1961 was borrowed and compared with the material at hand. New drawings are presented to clarify the illustrations of J. L. Barnard (1961), which are quite small and slightly inaccurate. His figure of the head shows a rounder, lateral cephalic lobe than actually exists in the specimen and this is corrected in figure 3.

The following slight differences were observed in our specimens: antenna 1, callynophore is longer, flagellum of antenna 2 is longer, article 2 of the mandibular palp is broader and the gnathopod 1 dactylus is stouter. These differences are most likely attributable to the difference in size, as the specimen examined is larger than J. L. Barnard’s (13.5 mm vs 8 mm). However, both are adult females possessing setose brood plates. K. H. Barnard’s holotype is a 7 mm male with a nine-articulate flagellum of antenna 2. In comparison, the adult female in our material has a 28-articulate flagellum.

This species has lateral, accessory lobes on all gills, with the largest lobe found on the gill of peraeopod 5. A small, deflexed rostrum is present that was not mentioned in the diagnosis of P. indurata by K. H. Barnard (1925) or J. L. Barnard (1961). The maxilla 1 palps are dimorphic, one being narrow with seven apical spines; the other widens distally and has eight stout, apical spines.

Griffiths (1975) synonymized J. L. Barnard’s species with Uristes induratus , a move that was accepted by Ledoyer (1986), Barnard and Karaman (1991) and Lowry and Stoddart (1994). This is the first record of the species in the north-east Pacific and a new depth record.

Distribution

Procyphocaris indurata has been recorded from southern Africa, Madagascar, Australia, New Caledonia and the north-east Pacific, off Point Conception, California in 1280–4050 m depth.
