Enoclerus albidulus Rifkind , n. sp.
( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 19 – 22 )
Type specimens. Holotype male: México, Puebla St[ate], Rt. 150, ca. 3.2 km E Santa Ana, 15 Oct, 1989, R. S. Zack collector. Holotype deposited in WSUC. Paratype: same data as holotype, deposited in JNRC.
Diagnosis. No other Enoclerus species combines small size (<4.0 mm) with shining, sparsely setose, concolorously pale elytra.
Description (Holotype). Length: 3.68 mm. Color: "Olympic" white; frons, cranium, antennae, mouthparts, prosternum, abdomen, legs, scutellum and 3 maculae on pronotum (a small diamond shaped spot at posterior middle before basal collar; 2 larger, irregular longitudinal markings arranged bilaterally on disk posterior to transverse impression), reddish–testaceous; vertex darkening to brown at middle; pronotal lateral margins with a dark brown line that is prolonged dorsally at the pronotal anterior margin and extends a finger dorsally at about the middle of the pronotum; mesosternum (medially), metasternum and metepisterna also dark brown. Head: antennae moderate in length; antennomeres 6–8 subserrate, gradually enlarged distally; club expansion relatively unabrupt; front bi–impressed; eyes rather small; ocular notch short, rectangulate; surface shining, moderately densely punctate, obscurely rugulose, very sparsely setose. Pronotum: broader than long (ratio of width to length approximately 9:8), narrower than elytra at base; transverse impression broadly U–shaped at middle; lateral foveae distinct; anterior and posterior margins subtruncate; disk subflattened; collar narrow; surface shining, rather coarsely and irregularly punctate (punctures shallower and nearly obsolete at middle of disk), very sparsely setose. Elytra: elongate (ratio of length to width 11:6), widest posterior to middle; humeri pronounced, gibbus , forming angles that are distinctly anterior to basal margin of scutellum; sides subparallel, slightly constricted posterior to humeri; slightly expanded behind middle; broadly, arcuately convergent to relatively narrow, separately rounded, dehiscent apices; subbasal swellings shallow, indistinct; surface shining, shallowly, irregularly dimpled, set with fine punctures (contrasting as dark points against white integument) arranged irregularly or subserially, except for a single longitudinal row running the length of each elytron at the sutural bead, and another row of dark punctures along the sides at the epipleural fold; vestiture rather sparse, inconspicuous, consisting of pale, short, mostly reclinate setae. Mesosternum: posterior median process not strongly elevated. Metasternum: shining, rather coarsely, irregularly punctate; sparsely setose; anterior median process not elevated. Abdomen: visible sternite 5 with hind margin feebly emarginate; sixth visible sternite small, with hind angles rounded, hind margin apparently subtruncate. Legs: rather robust; all tarsi with well developed basal claws.
Variation. The single paratype specimen, also a male, measures 3.80 mm.
Etymology. The specific name refers to the new species' distinctive whitish elytra.
Distribution. Known only from the type locality.
