Enoclerus citricornis Rifkind , n. sp.

Type specimen. Holotype male: Costa Rica, Cartago Province, Turrialba, CATIE, May 28–31, 1987, E. Giesbert, coll. Holotype deposited in CSCA.

Diagnosis. No other North or Middle American Enoclerus species has a primarily stramineous elytral surface marked only on the posterior 1/3 with a black macula. The new species is somewhat similar, however, to a handful of South American forms. Among these, the closest appear to be the Ecuadorian species E. bipartitus (Schenkling) and the Bolivian E. flavibasis Chapin , but these have the black posterior elytral marking in the form of a fascia, and lack the anteapical band of silvery setae which is distinct in E. citricornis . The new species is also somewhat similar to the Amazonian E. circumductus (Schenkling) , but that species has the posterior black fascia partially interrupted on each side by a narrow, anteapical stramineous band, and has black rather than orange antennae.

Description (Holotype). Length: 7.10 mm. Color: black (venter with a slight bluish cast); antennal scape, pedicel and funicle partially, and antennal club entirely, orange–testaceous; elytra, excepting scutellum, basal margin narrowly, sutural bead and a large elongate–ovate macula on each elytron at posterior 1/3 (maculae complete to apices), pale buttercream. Head: surface shining; minutely, densely and shallowly punctate; set deeply but inconspicuously with short, and fewer medium length, erect, fine, black setae. Pronotum: a little longer than broad; anterior margin broadly arcuate; posterior margin inflexed at middle; transverse impression rather shallow, U–shaped at middle; surface shining, punctation as on head; vestiture as on head except as follows: anterior margin arrayed with a line of suberect, silvery–white setae, produced posteriorly in a triangular patch at middle; posterior slope rather thinly set with elongate, erect, pale setae laterally and a sagittate patch of short, erect pale setae at middle. Elytra: elongate (ratio of length to width approximately 9:5), widest at posterior 1/3; anterior margin bisinuate; subbasal tumescences obsolete; disk broadly subflattened; posterior slope moderately shallow; apices separately, rather narrowly rounded, dehiscent; surface shining, irregularly, rather sparsely and minutely punctate (punctures distinctly infuscate on pale areas), and shallowly roughened; pale surface moderately densely, but quite inconspicuously, clothed with short, fine, erect stramineous setae, interspersed with a few longer, more robust, erect, dark setae; posterior maculae set with short, erect black setae, transected anteapically by a slightly arcuate band of suberect silvery–white setae, complete to lateral margins and internally to suture. Mesosternum: posterior median process setose, elevated at apex. Metasternum: densely rugulose–punctulate, moderately setose; anterior median process sulcate, not elevated apically. Abdomen: surface shining, rather sparsely setose; visible sternite 5 with hind margin arcuately emarginate at middle; visible sternite 6 with posterior angles rounded, posterior margin slightly inflexed at middle, surpassed by rounded apex of visible tergite 6; setal daggers absent. Legs: robust.

Etymology. The specific epithet combines the Latin word for "citrus" with that for "horn" in reference to the orange–colored antennae of the new species.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality, CATIE: the grounds of the Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, at Turrialba, Costa Rica.
