Enoclerus mocho Rifkind , n. sp.
( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 18 )
Type specimen. Holotype female: México, Chiapas, Motozintla, Ojo de Agua, 1420 m, Pine–Oak forest, 15°17'N, 92°17'E, from traps, 2000, L. R. Granados, coll. Holotype deposited in CSCA.
Diagnosis. Distinguished by unique setal distribution and color, and the shape of the median elytral fascia. The new species appears most similar to E. regius Rifkind. It can be separated from the latter by the following: reddish pronotal vestiture much shorter, with an admixture of distinctive, elongate black setae; median elytral fascia narrowly constricted internally on either side of suture, incomplete at sutural margin ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ).
Description (Holotype). Length: 6.75 mm. Color: black; terminal maxillary palpomere (distally) and antennomeres 1 and 2 (in part), testaceous; antennal capitulum brown; tarsi reddish–brown; elytra with an irregularly transverse eburneous median fascia, complete laterally, sinuate anteriorly and posteriorly, abruptly, obliquely narrowed anteriorly laterad to suture on either side, just slightly incomplete internally at sutural margin. Head: frontal umbo rather prominent; surface finely, densely, shallowly granulate–punctate, rather densely set with short, suberect rust–colored setae, interspersed with a few longer pale and infuscate setae. Pronotum: about as broad as long; anterior margin slightly arcuately produced at middle; transverse impression rather indistinct, broadly U–shaped at middle; disk broadly subflattened above; surface sculpture and vestiture as on head, except set in addition with a thinly arrayed but distinct complement of robust, erect dark setae of moderate length. Elytra: elongate (ratio of length to width 47:29), widest posterior to middle; humeri rounded; subbasal swellings shallow, rounded above; disk subflattened above; posterior slope gradual; apices dehiscent; surface densely asperate–punctate anteriorly, punctures appearing more coarse, profound and distinctly separated at median pale fascia; posterior densely, shallowly granulate–punctate; vestiture as follows: anterior black band set with short, reclinate, and longer, erect black setae, intermingled with short, reclinate coppery setae that do not attain the eburneous median fascia; median fascia unobtrusively set with short, suberect, and a few longer, erect, pale setae; post median dark band clothed with short, rather fine, suberect black setae and a few more robust, erect black setae; posterior 1/4 rather densely set with a wedge–shaped band of reclinate coppery setae, interspersed with a few reclinate and erect, more robust black setae. Mesosternum: posterior median process moderately elevated at apex. Metasternum: densely clothed with long silvery setae. Abdomen: surface shallowly roughened, rather sparsely clothed with silvery setae; visible sternite 5 very slightly, arcuately inflexed at middle of posterior margin; visible sternite 6 and visible tergite 6 with posterior margins semicircularly rounded. Legs: robust.
Variation. Known only from the holotype specimen.
Etymology. The specific name is derived from the word " mochó ," the language of the indigenous Maya of Motozintla, the type locality of the new species.
Distribution. Known from southeastern Chiapas, México. It probably also occurs in adjacent Guatemala.
