Crunomys suncoides is in the same clade as C. melanius , and both are sister taxa of C. celebensis . Closest relative is in a clade of Maxomys subspecies. Monotypic.
Distribution. Known only from type locality on Mindanao I, Philippines. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 106 mm, tail 79 mm, ear 10mm, hindfoot 23 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. The Katanglad Shrew Mouse is small and characterized by soft thick rich orange-brown dorsum and bright orange brown pelage on chest and belly. Snout is elongated, with 4mm,flexible, cartilaginous tip. Eyes are very small and encircled by ring without pigments or hairs. Tail is nearly as long as head-body length and sharply bicolored. Skull is narrower and rostrum longer than in the other species of Crunomys . Dental rows are very short and small. Chromosomal complement is 2n = 26, FN = 43.
Habitat. Primary forest between montane and mossy forest zones at an elevation of 2250 m. At the type locality, trees (gymnosperms and laurels) were 7-10 m high with many epiphytes, and understory was rich with deep humus and thick leaflitter.
Food and Feeding. Stomach of the single specimen of the Katanglad Shrew Mouse contained only arthropod remains.
Breeding. No information.
Activity patterns. The Katanglad Shrew Mouse is terrestrial, probably diurnal like other species of Crunomys , and perhaps semi-fossorial.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.
Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List. The Katanglad Shrew Mouse is known from a single specimen collected more than a century ago.
