Taxonomy. Hapalomys suntsovi Abramov, Balakirev & Rozhnov, 2017 ,
“Vietnam, c.13 km NE of Bu Gia Map Village, Bu Gia Map National Park, Binh Phuoc Province, 12°12°N, 107°12’E, elevation 540 m above sea level.”
This species was previously included under H. delacouri , which is need of further revision throughout its distribution, and may have a more widespread distribution then what is currently known. Monotypic.
Distribution. Known only from Bu Gia Map National Park, Binh Phuoc Province, S Vietnam; perhaps adjacent E Cambodia. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head—body 127-146 mm,tail 150-165 mm. Nospecific data are available for body weight. Suntsov’s Marmoset Rat is medium-sized, being smaller than the
(
Greater Marmoset Rat ( H. longicaudatus ) and similar in sizeto the Lesser Marmoset Rat ( H. delacouri ) but with longer tail. Pelage is dense and soft, with marked difference between grayish brown dorsum (seemingly more gray on rump) and white venter. Tail is covered with long hairs on distal part, completely black, and 116% of head-body length. Hallux offoot is fully opposable and has nail instead ofclaw. Ears are small and rounded. Skull has short and
broad rostrum, braincase has prominent postorbital and temporal ridges, and incisive foramen is short. There are three longitudinal cusp rows on upper and lower molars. Diploid numberis 2n = 38.
Habitat. Old growth bamboothickets at elevations of ¢.540 m.
Food and Feeding. No information.
Breeding. Twoearly-stage pregnant Suntsov’s Marmoset Rats were caught in January with four and five embryos.
Activity patterns. Suntsov’s Marmoset Ratis arboreal.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.
Status and Conservation. Not assessed on The IUCN Red List. Suntsov’s Marmoset Rat seems to have a restricted distribution, but the only known population is in Bu Gia Map National Park.
