Type locality. Petrópolis , Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Bionomics. Its larval habitat of this species is typically bamboo internodes. In Panama, larvae of Sa. shannoni have been found in association with Culex (Carrollia) antunesi Lane & Whitman, 1943 , a Cx. ( Culex ) species, Li. durhamii , Onirion sirivanakarni ( Duret, 1982) , Sa. (Pey.) identicus , Sa. (Pey.) handrognatus, a Shannoniana species, Trichoprosopon castroi Lane & Cerqueira, 1942 , Tr. pallidiventer ( Lutz, 1905) , a Toxorhynchites (Lynchiella) species and a species of Wyeomyia (Wyeomyia) ( Harbach, 2002) . Immature stages were found in perforated bamboo internodes ( Guadua latifolia (Bonpl.) Kunth ) in French Guiana ( Talaga et al. 2015), and in cut bamboo in association with Haemagogus (Conopostegus) leucocelaenus ( Dyar & Shannon, 1924) and Wyeomyia (Wyeomyia) arthrostigma ( Lutz, 1905) in Brazil ( Nascimento-Pereira et al. 2021). Besides bamboo, immature stages of Sa. shannoni have been found in water accumulated in axils of a terrestrial bromeliad in association with Cx. (Mcx.) imitator Theobald, 1903, Johnbelkinia ulopus ( Dyar & Knab, 1906a), Li. durhamii , a Toxorhynchites (Lynchiella) species, a species of Weyomyia (Histatomyia) and Wy. (Wyo.) pertinans Williston, 1986 ( Harbach & Howard 2002). Females of Sa. shannoni bite humans during daytime inside forest ( Guimarães et al. 2000b), but rarely in open fields ( Guimarães et al. 2000a).

Occurrence in Brazil. States of Acre, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia and São Paulo ( Lane & Cerqueira 1942; Forattini et al. 1986a, 1986b; Guimarães et al. 2000 a, 2000b; Harbach & Howard 2002; Talaga et al. 2015; Santos et al. 2019; Nascimento-Pereira et al. 2021).

Occurrence in other countries. Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama and Nicaragua ( Wilkerson et al. 2021).
