Quercus View in CoL × kabylica Trabut

The name Quercus × kabylica was published in 1890 ( Trabut 1890a) and not in 1886, 1888 or 1889 as has been stated. This publication is clearly dated 1890, although the date of the congress it was reporting was 1889. The references cited above give p. 506 as the place of publication and although the name does appear there, it was actually published on p. 504.

We examined the following specimens at MPU in order to select a lectotype: barcodes MPU010435 View Materials , MPU010436 View Materials , MPU010437 View Materials , MPU010438 View Materials , MPU010439 View Materials , MPU010440 View Materials , and MPU010441 View Materials . Of these we can just consider the last two, since only these have a collection date prior to publication by Trabut in 1890. As this work was based on a presentation given in August 1889, specimens would need to have been collected before then. Both were collected by Trabut in Akfadou , Algeria, as mentioned in the original description .

The two selected sheets are marked as numbers 1 and 2 of a set and likely came from the same tree. Only MPU010440 is marked with the collection date of October 1888. They have shoots with perfectly developed leaves and fruits. Both show annual fruits, while in MPU010439 biennial fruits can also be seen, aspects that together with the characteristics of the cups with linear, free, and recurved bracts, show the proximity to the two parental species ( Q. afares and Q. suber ).

We propose the specimen MPU010440 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) as the lectotype of the name Quercus × kabylica .

We agree with Trabut’s (1889a; 1889b) initial observations that Q. × kabylica and Q. × numidica both represent variants of the hybrid between Q. afares and Q. suber , and therefore are synonyms, for which the earliest name is Q. × numidica .
