Trouessartia appendiculata (Berlese, 1886)
( Figs. 16 View FIGURE 16 A–C, 20A, B)
Pterocolus appendiculatus Berlese, 1886 : fasc. 24, No 7; Canestrini 1886: 298.
Trouessartia appendiculata: Canestrini & Kramer 1899: 121 ; Dubinin 1951: 77, fig. 48- 1, 1952: 260, fig. 3- 2; Santana 1976: 20, figs. 21–26; Gaud & Atyeo 1986: 271, figs. 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, e.
Trouessartia minutipes: Gaud & Petitot 1948: 44 , pl. II, fig. d (misidentification).
Trouessartia phylloscopi Birdejnaja & Kivganov 2011 : e29, fig. 2 (part, female).
Material examined: 7 males and 11 females (ZISP 7458–7475) from Hirundo rustica Linnaeus, 1758 ( Passeriformes : Hirundinidae ), CANADA, Manitoba, Winnipeg, 7 June 1999, coll. T.D. Galloway.
Trouessartia appendiculata was originally described from the sand martin, Riparia riparia (Linnaeus) (Berlese 1886) View in CoL . However, this record was probably the result of accidental contamination or incorrect host identification, because this mite species is specific to swallows of the genus Hirundo View in CoL ( Santana 1976; Gaud & Atyeo 1986). At the same time, the appendiculata species group is represented on R. riparia View in CoL by T. piscicauda Gaud, 1957 (see below), which is unmistakably different from T. appendiculata by the structure of the terminal lamellae in males ( Figs. 16A View FIGURE 16 versus D). Trouessartia appendiculata was reported from H. rustica View in CoL almost worldwide, in Europe, Africa, South East Asia and North America ( Canada, Cuba), and also from H. smithi (Leach) in Cameroon ( Gaud & Till 1961; Černý 1967; Santana, 1976; Gaud & Atyeo 1986; Galloway et al. 2014).
The reports of this mite from Cecropis senegalensis (Linnaeus) View in CoL and Psalidoprocne pristoptera petiti Sharpe & Bouvier View in CoL in Cameroon ( Gaud 1957; Gaud & Mouchet 1958) were proven to be misidentifications ( Gaud & Atyeo 1986); the reports from Pseudhirundo griseopyga (Sundevall) in Zair View in CoL ( Gaud & Atyeo 1986) and Petrochelidon pyrrhonota (Vieillot) in the Wrangel Island, Russia ( Dubinin 1952), also are highly probable misidentifications.
