Nototrichium Hillebr. View in CoL

Nototrichium View in CoL is an endemic genus from the Hawaiian Islands ( Havran & Ross 2013), currently including three species, two of which (syntypes for Nototrichium View in CoL ) were originally referred to by Hillebrand (1888: 372): “ Nototrichium sandwicense View in CoL ” [a newly proposed, but not validly published combination (see discussion below) of “ Ptilotus sandwicense View in CoL ” (a nomen nudum, see discussion below), with two varieties, “var. kauaiense Gray ex Hillebrand (1888: 373) ”, and “var. longespicatum Hillebrand (1888: 373) ”], and N. humile Hillebrand (1888: 373) View in CoL . The third currently accepted species is N. divaricatum Lorence (1996: 64) View in CoL (see Havran & Ross 2013, Wagner et al. 2016). Hillebrand (1888: 372) also described N. viride Hillebrand (1888: 373) View in CoL (a third syntype for Nototrichium View in CoL ) which is currently considered as conspecific with “ N. sandwicense View in CoL ” (see e.g., Native Plants Hawaii 2009).

The designation “ Nototrichium sandwicense View in CoL ” by Hillebrand (1888: 372) was originally published by Mann (1867: 200) as “ Ptilotus sanwicensis Gray ”. Mann (1867: note “*”) reported a diagnosis and the sentence “in Bot. S. Pacif. Expl. Exp. ined. (M. & B. [= Mann & Brigham, as reported by Mann (1867: 148)] 590; Remy 207.)”. The latter citation refers to the expedition “ United States South Pacific Exploring Expedition” as indicated by Mann (1867) in the first page of the Introduction of his Enumeration of Hawaiian plants. Mann (l.c.) also specified that he examined “collections of Hawaiian plant in the Gray Herbarium”, a set of which was “gathered by Jules Remy”. Unfortunately, no diagnosis or description or reference to a previous published diagnosis or description was given, so the name “ Ptilotus sandwicensis View in CoL ” is a nomen nudum (Art. 38.1), and consequently, the Hillebrand’s combination was not validly published. Fortunately, a name ― N. viride View in CoL ― is available for the Hawaian taxon known as “ Nototrichium sandwicense View in CoL ” (see Native Plant Hawaii 2009).

From among Nototrichium viride and N. humile (sintypes), the first one occurs in all the eight Hawaiian Islands, while N. humile is restricted to East Maui, and O’ahu Island (Wai’anae Mountains) (see Wagner et al. 2016). I prefer to designate here the most frequent species ― N. viride ― as the generitype of Nototrichium . Sherff (1951: 6) proposed a “lectotypification” of “ Nototrichium sandwicense ” on a specimen preserved at GH00037133. However, since it has no nomenclature status, it cannot be typified.

Concerning Nototrichium viride , I found four specimens at BISH (barcode BISH1005567), GH (barcode GH00037128), K (barcode K000814959), and US (barcode US 00102713) each bearing a plant collected by H. Mann and W.T. Brigham (collection number: 590) in the Hawaian Island, Kauai County, Hanapepe locality. These label data match the protologue and the four specimens can be considered as part of the original material. I designate here the GH00037128 as the lectotype of the name Nototrichum viride , the other specimens are isolectotypes.
