The coordinates of the type locality in the original description were erroneous, which should have been 19°46’ S, 42°36’ W according to the collector. Monotypic.
Distribution. Known only from two localities in lowlands of E Bolivia and SE Brazil. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 78-91 mm, tail 58-61 mm, ear 27-5-31 mm, forearm 66-6-68-3 mm. See general characteristics of the genus under the Black Bonneted Bat ( E. auripendulus ). Dorsal pelage of Chimera’s Bonneted Bat is dark brown; venter is slightly paler. Pelage is soft and long (7-8 mm in shoulder region). Dorsal hairs are bicolored, with basal one-third being light brown. Face is blackish and weakly haired. Nose is blackish, and upper border of narial region is surrounded by line of rigid, pointed, and blackish warts; internarial region has skinny crest covered by small and spoon-like hairs. Upper border of ears is smooth, without pointed warts; inner fold in ears is weakly developed not covering antitragus even partially. Tragus is squareshaped, and antitragus is wider than higher. Dorsal surfaces of propatagium and plagiopatagium near forearm and dactilopatagium at basal middle of fifth metacarpal are covered with short dark brown hair. Uropatagium is grayish and lighter than wing membrane. Feet are blackish; external edges and ventral surface offirst and fifth toes of feet are covered with short silver hair, and longer hairs of same color cover claws. Calcar is longer than feet. Skull is robust, with wide braincase and opistocranium that is not extended. Rostrum is short and slightly domed at nostril region, resulting in concavity at braincase and rostrum. Basisphenoid pits are large, more rectangular than oval, moderately deep, and separated from each other by thin bony crest (0-75 mm). P? is larger than in all other species of Eumops and in line with tooth row. Premetacrista is as long as postparacrista on M”.
Habitat. Semideciduousforests with tall trees (30 m) in south-eastern Brazil and dense and shrubby vegetation of Chaparral de Abayoy in Chiquitano Forest in Bolivia at elevations of 382-650 m.
Food and Feeding. Chimera’s Bonneted Bat is an aerial insectivore.
Breeding. No information.
Activity patterns. Chimera’s Bonneted Bat has been captured at ¢.23:00 h in Bolivia. It has been captured in mist nets set at ground level near edges of artificial water bodies. Holotype was flying ¢. 20 m over a lagoon, and it was probably attracted to the mist net by insects flying next to the light from the flashlight of the researchers.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.
Status and Conservation. Not assessed on The IUCN Red List.
