Taxonomy. Molossus maurus Thomas, 1901 ,

“ Kanuku Mountains , about 59° W. and 3° N. ... on the savannahs near their base ..: Alt. 240 feet [= 73m], Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, Guyana.

This species is monotypic.

Distribution. Scattered localities in NE Venezuela, S Guyana, Suriname (unknown locality, not mapped), NE Ecuador, E Peru, and Brazil.

Descriptive notes. Head-body 62-81 mm, tail 40-52 mm, ear 18-25 mm, hindfoot 10-12 mm, forearm 51-61 mm; weight 22-24 g. See general characteristics of the genus under the Black Bonneted Bat ( E. auripendulus ). The Guianan Bonneted Bat is slightly larger than Sanborn’s Bonneted Bat ( E. hansae ). Dorsal pelage is uniform dark brown, with c¢. 6mm long hairs extending onto wing and tail membrane. Ventral pelage is similar in color to dorsum, with contrasting streak of white hairs on pale and translucent ventral surfaces of wing membranes. Ears reach nose tip. Tragus is small and narrow, with square tip. Adult males have well-developed gular gland on throat.

Habitat. Lowland tropical rainforests, plantations of Caribbean pine ( Pinus caribaea, Pinaceae ), savannas with swamps and gallery forests, and urban areas.

Food and Feeding. In Ecuador, stomach contents of Guianan Bonneted Bats contained beetles ( Tenebrionidae , Eucnemidae , and Scarabaeidae ), cicadas ( Cicadidae ), and cockroaches (Blattodea).

Breeding. Guianan Bonneted Bats were pregnant in July ( Peru) and September ( Ecuador). In Venezuela, a young female with cartilaginous phalangeal epiphyses in wing joints was collected in July.

Activity patterns. The Guianan Bonneted Bat roosts in palm leaves. It has been caught in a net set above a bridge over a river and in a 15" floor apartment building.

Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List.
