Mortensen 1925: 149, pl. 8, figs. 1,2, text figs. 2–4; Mortensen 1933: 245; Macan 1938: 402; Clark & Courtman-Stock 1976: 60; A.M. Clark 1993: 242. (as A. marleyi ) Jangoux & Aziz 1988: 633 (as A. cristatus )

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the presence of one to many button-like granules on the superomarginal ( Fig. 2B,C View FIGURE 2 ) and actinal plates, a duck billed (i.e. paddle-shaped) pedicellariae on the adambulacral plate ( Fig. 2E View FIGURE 2 ) adjacent to furrow spines. Additionally, a bivalve pedicellariae is present on the adambulacral plate surface adjacent five to eight furrow spines ( Fig. 2E View FIGURE 2 ). It possesses two to four short spines on the inferomarginal plate surface ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ).

Comments. Observations of this species from Madagascar, the Mascarene Islands, the Mayotte Islands, and Reunion Island show variation in inferomarginal spine morphology. Madagascar specimens display welldeveloped, cylindrical spines with blunt, quadrate flattened tips. Specimens from the Mascarene Islands and off the Mayotte Islands show inferomarginal spines with conical, pointed tips. Reunion Island specimens show more weakly developed tubercle-like pointed inferomarginal spines.

One specimen, IE-2007-1173 showed significant sublethal damage in the interradial region.

Macan (1938: 402) outlined the color of this species with a “white” abactinal surface “with a fine reticulation of carnelian red between the plates.” Deck shots of this species by BIOMAGLO show individuals as a bright yellow with speckled red highlights.

Occurrence. South Africa, off the coast of Natal. Zanzibar channel, Reunion Island, Mascarene Islands, Madagascar, north of Mayotte Island 183–490 m (depth range extended)
