Type material: male from Fazenda Retiro Novo, Pirizal, Nossa Senhora do Livramento [16°15'– 17°54' S; 56°36'– 57°56' W], Mato Grosso, Brazil, January 2004 – March 2005, L.D. Battirola, deposited in IBSP 92097.

Paratypes: BRAZIL: Mato Grosso: Nossa Senhora do Livramento (Fazenda Retiro Novo, Pirizal), [16°15'- 17°54' S; 56°36'- 57°56' W], 13 1Ƥ, January 2004 – March 2005, L.D. Battirola ( IBSP 92099, 92098).

Etymology. The specific name honours Dr. Joachim Adis (1950 – 2007), from the Max Planck Institute, Plön, Germany, for his longstanding contribution to the study of Arachnids in South America.

Diagnosis. Males of Scytodes adisi n.sp. are distinguished from those of the remaining Neotropical Scytodes by the palp with a long, prolateral, hyaline keel ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ) and short and rounded retrolateral laminar projection ( Fig. 40–41 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ). The females resemble those of S. tuyucua Brescovit, Rheims & Raizer (2004: 77, fig. 8) by the narrow and slightly curved positioning ridges ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ) and by the slightly median position of the spermathecae, curving towards each other, anterior to the hyaline pockets ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ; Brescovit et al. 2004: 77, fig. 43). They are distinguished by more widely separated positioning ridges ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ) and by the larger, rounded spermathecae ( Fig. 43 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ).

Description. Male (Holotype, IBSP 92097) Carapace pale yellow with brown pattern as shown on Fig. 38 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 . Chelicerae pale yellow with dorsal, longitudinal, brown stripe. Pedipalps pale yellow. Patellae and tibia with dorsal and prolateral longitudinal brown stripes. Labium and endites pale yellow. Sternum pale yellow with brown markings in front of each coxae. Legs pale yellow. Femur I–IV with ventral pair of longitudinal brown stripes. Tibia I–IV with dark distal extremities. Abdomen gray with faint black pattern ( Fig. 38 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ). Total length 2.9. Carapace slightly domed, 1.5 long, 1.4 wide. Eye diameters: PME 0.12, ALE 0.14, PLE 0.12. Lateral eyes on a tubercle. Chelicerae with subapical hyaline keel and inconspicuous stridulatory ridges. Labium 0.12 long, 0.20 wide. Sternum 0.82 long, 0.68 wide. Leg measurements: I: femur 2.5, patella 0.4, tibia 2.9, metatarsus 3.6, tarsus 0.7, total 10.1; II: 2.0, 0.4, 2.0, 2.4, 0.5, 7.3; III: 1.3, 0.4, 1.2, 1.4, 0.3, 4.6; IV: 1.8, 0.4, 1.7, 2.0, 0.5, 6.4. Palpal femur with stridulatory pick long and slender with triangular, projected socket. Cymbium with pair of distal spines, one large and strong and the other, slightly subdistal, smaller and thinner ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ). Bulb 0.54 long, very slightly constricted medially. Distal region with long, prolateral, hyaline keel ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ), slightly dorsal, retrolateral keel and short and rounded retrolateral laminar projection ( Fig. 40–41 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ). Abdomen 1.4 long, 1.1 wide, covered with slender hairs.

Female (Paratype, IBSP 92098). Coloration pattern as in male. Total length 3.8. Carapace domed, 1.7 long, 1.6 wide. Eye diameters: PME 0.12, ALE 0.12, PLE 0.12. Lateral eyes on a tubercle. Chelicerae as in male. Labium 0.16 long, 0.20 wide. Sternum 0.94 long, 0.76 wide. Leg measurements: I: femur 1.9, patella 0.4, tibia 2.0, metatarsus 2.0, tarsus 0.4, total 6.7; II: 1.5, 0.4, 1.4, 1.8, 0.4, 5.5; III: 1.1, 0.4, 1.0, 1.1, 0.4, 4.0; IV: 1.6, 0.4, 1.5, 1.4, 0.4, 5.3. Palpal femur as in male. Epigynum with slightly curved and narrow positioning ridges and narrow foveas, separated from each other by at least eight times their width ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ). Vulva with large and rounded spermathecae, slightly curved towards each other, posterior to slightly rectangular hyaline pockets with narrow, antero-lateral sclerotized areas ( Fig. 43 View FIGURES 32 – 43. 32 – 37 ). Abdomen 2.1 long, 2.2 wide, as in male. Variation. Two males: total length 2.9–3.1; carapace 1.5–1.6; femur I 2.5–2.7.

Distribution. Cerrado. Only known from the type locality, in the central-western state of Mato Grosso.
