Type Locality: Argentina, Catamarca Prov., Otro Cerro.

Vernacular Names: Catamarca Tuco-tuco.

Distribution: Mountains of La Rioia (W Argentina), north to Salta.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Cabrera (1961) believed viperinus synonymous with knighti . Karyotype reported for this taxon (2n=36 and FN=64; Reig et al., 1992) is from specimens now recognized as C. scagliai .
