Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 10 June 2009; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island , off southeastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Sri Lanka east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Lives in schools off coastal reefs, often in areas with limited visibility, 0–60 m depth. Marine.
