Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias and Kavieng, New Ireland as Centriscus strigatus by Duncker & Mohr (1925: 6) and Mohr (1937: 25), based on ZMH 11908, 11909. NTUM 11304 (1 specimen, 72.1 mm SL, St. CP4490-3, off northwest side of New Hanover).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Andaman Islands east to Pohnpei ( Micronesia), north to southern Japan, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Usually in schools in coral reefs, sometimes seeking refuge among sea urchin spines, 1–42 m depth. Marine.
