Prognichthys brevipinnis (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1847) —Shortfin flyingfish

Status at New Ireland. Originally described from Carteret Harbour, New Ireland as Exocoetus brevipinnis by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1847: 123), based on MNHN 0 602 (holotype); subsequently reported from off the south coast of New Ireland, as Prognichthys gibbifrons (non Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1847), by Munro (1958: 138).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 3.—General distribution: East Africa east to Palau and Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands. Epipelagic in oceanic waters, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
