Material examined. 22 specimens: MNRJ 26877 (12, 267.0–348.0 mm), T, D-464; MNRJ 26917 (2, 267.0– 391.0 mm), T, E-534; MNRJ 26920 (1, 190.0 mm), T, E-500; MNRJ 26991 (1, 340.0 mm), T, E-503; MNRJ 26992 (3, 390.0–445.0 mm), T, E-541; MNRJ 30476 (3, 305.0–402.0 mm), T, E-546.

Distribution. Collected from off Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, at depths from 360 to 822 m. Malacocephalus occidentalis was described from off North Carolina, USA (35°44’ N, 74°51’ W), and is known from about 40° N to 40° S in the western Atlantic, and 30° N to 20° S in the eastern Atlantic (Cohen et al. 1990; Menezes & Figueiredo 2003a).
