Hishimonus aberrans Knight View in CoL
( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 C, 1F, 5A–F)
Hishimonus aberrans Knight 1970a: 137 View in CoL . Holotype male (not examined), Formosa, M. Kato (BMNH).
Material examined. 1 male, 1 female, Petchabun Kaeng Krachan NP, km33/helipad, 12o50.177’N 99o20.688’E, 735m, malaise trap 18–25.v.2009, Sinchai, T4943 ( QSBG); 1 male, North Thailand Hort. Res. Stn. SW of Ban Mae Win, 18o37’32”N 98o30’17”E, 21.v.2005, P.S. Gillespie, u. v. light ( ASCU).
Description. Head and thorax pale testaceous with brown speckling. Vertex with darker markings anterior along shallow transverse depression. Tegmen mottled in patches with brown, darker apically, with line of brown spots inside costal margin. Posterior brown marking well defined anteriorly, less so posteriorly. Ventrally, abdomen pale, female terminalia brown.
Male genitalia. Subgenital plates broadly rounded at base, then margins lightly curved before abruptly narrowing to elongate posterior fingerlike process. Paramere with posterior process long, tapering, divergent from opposing paramere process. Connective with arms longer than stem. Aedeagus with shafts moderately divergent in posterior view, curved dorsally to be almost parallel towards apex, with narrow elongate basal process from posterior edge of each shaft extending to about half length of shafts. In lateral view, shafts more or less straight to almost midlength then curved anteriorly to reveal apex of basal process, slightly tapering from base to apex where apical process is hooked anteriorly.
Comments. This species was described by Knight (1970a) based on a single male specimen from Taiwan. It shows affinity with H. diffractus sp. nov. in which the basal processes are united with the shaft of the aedeagus on each side rather than being separate from the shaft throughout their length as in this species. Both species have the subgenital plates abruptly narrowed apically before the apical fingerlike process, a feature they also share with H. gillespiei and H. diffractus .
