scientific name

Sargassum acinarium (L.) Setch.
status

Fucus acinarius Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 1160. 1753.

"Habitat in Italia & Oceano australiori." RCN: 8279, 8305.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 1274.172 ( LINN) ; [icon] in Donati, Stor. Nat. Adrian: 35, t. 4, f. A. 1750; [icon] in Plantin, Pl. Stirp. Icon. 2: 256. 1581.

Current name: Sargassum acinarium (L.) Setch. ( Sargassaceae ).

Note: Silva & al. (in Univ. Calif. Publ. Bot. 79: 929-931. 1996) gave an extensive review, suggesting that "the Adriatic plant described and illustrated by Donati" might be a suitable type. However, it seems that nomenclatural difficulties might result from this type choice (see Spencer & al. in Taxon, in press).
