Type locality: Cook’s Reef, Torres Strait.

Basionym: Navicula notabilis Greville.

Morphometrics: Valves 30–69 (25–90) μm long, 19–34 (20–40) μm wide, and transapical striae 6–8 (7–12) in 10 μm.

Remarks: Diploneis notabilis is distributed along the coasts extending from the Mediterranean to northern Europe, but mainly in warmer oceans (Hustedt 1961–1966). This taxon is widespread worldwide, has already been reported in North Sea and Black Sea, in the Mediterranean, and in the Tahiti Islands ( Ricard 1977), in Penghu Islands of Taiwan ( Li 1978), in Red Sea, Ceylon, Madagascar, Java, West Indies, Brazil, Lauan Island, Sandwich Island, Malaysia, Cape of Good Hope ( Cleve 1894), and in the southwestern coast of India ( Gopinathan 1984), as well as Gulf of Mexico ( Krayesky et al. 2009), Galapagos Islands and Samoa ( Stidolph et al 2012), west coast of Baja California Peninsula in Mexico (Siqueiros-Beltrones et al. 2017), and the Mediterranean Sea ( Jenhani et al. 2019). It is a tropical taxon inhabiting warmer oceans. This taxon is rarely epiphytic on seaweeds in the Seogwipo coast, and thus represents a new record for South Korea.
