10. Encyclia chapadensis Menezes (1992e: 135) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Goiás: Alto Paraíso , Chapada dos Veadeiros, 22 September 1991, Menezes UB 16 (holotype: UB!) ( Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 , 24J View FIGURE 24 ) .
Lithophyte herbs, 11.5−17.7 cm tall. Pseudobulbs conical, 4.0−6.5 × 1.1−2.1 cm. Leaves 2, oblanceolate to lanceolate, 7.0−10.0 × 1.3−1.5 cm, apex obtuse to acute. Inflorescence a loosely 3–8-flowered, simple raceme; peduncle 27.5−45.6 cm long; rachis 7.5−19.0 cm long. Flowers with pedicel 2.4 × 0.3 cm, pedicel glabrous; sepals brownish green, dorsal lanceolate, c. 3.0 x 0.8 cm, laterals lanceolate, 2.8 × 0.8 cm, reflexed, margin entire, apex uncinate; petals brownish green, spatulate, 2.7 × 0.9 cm, reflexed, margin entire, apex uncinate; lip with claw 0.2 × 0.3 cm, lateral lobes free from the midlobe, c. 1.2 × 0.6 cm, pink, at about a 45° angle to midlobe (in the flattened lip), not overlapping it, margin entire, apex obtuse, midlobe rounded, c. 1.0 × 1.4 cm, pink streaked with darker pink, conduplicate, margin entire, apex mucronate, callus cymbiform, acute; column clavate, c. 1.1 × 0.5 cm, clinandrium apex tridentate, lateral teeth triangular, apex obtuse, column arms elliptic, c. 0.20 × 0.15 cm, apex obtuse; stigma elliptic, with basal hooks; anther one, yellow, c. 0.3 × 0.4 cm.
Distribution and habitat:— Endemic to the central-west, in cerrado, where it is recorded only from the Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiás State ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ).
Habit:— Rupicolous.
Etymology:— Refering to the Chapada dos Veadeiros, the locality where the material was collected.
Phenology:— Flowering September–March.
Taxonomic notes:— Encyclia chapadensis is morphologically similar to E. alboxanthina and E. osmantha . Like E. alboxanthina , E. chapadensis is rupicolous with reflexed sepals and petals. However, E. osmantha occurs only as an epiphyte and has pendent sepals and petals. Beyond these differences one can observe that in E. chapadensis and E. alboxanthina the lip midlobe is rounded, whereas in E. osmantha it is deltoid. There are clear floral colour differences in living specimens since E. alboxanthina and E. osmantha bear greenish sepals and petals with a white lip, whereas E. chapadensis has brownish petals and sepals and a pink lip with darker pink stripes. This species was erroneously identified as E. albopurpurea in Fowlie & Duveen (1992: 4).
