Geochus rugulosus Broun 1885: 386 . Type locality: Mokohinau Island .

Type Depository. BMNH : LT, 1 PLT.

Distribution. New Zealand (ND).

Remarks. Broun did not indicate the number of specimens he examined for naming this species. Among the specimens in the Broun collection (BMNH), two were not labeled as variants and were considered syntypical. A single variant in Paris (MHNP) was not considered a part of the syntype series. We designate one of the BMNH specimens as the lectotype to stabilize the epithet, with the other becoming a paralectotype.

This species has the most setose pronotum of any species of Geochus described to date, and has rounded elytra with convex interstriae.

Type Material Examined. Lectotype, here designated ( BMNH): card-mounted, “1672. [in Broun’s hand]// New Zealand. [red underline] Broun Coll. Brit. Mus. 1922-482.//Mokohinau Is// Geochus rugulosus [in Broun’s hand]” . Paralectotype: 1 ( BMNH), same but mounted dorsally, lacking the locality label, and “rugulosus [in Broun’s hand]” .
