Type material. Dissected female holotype ( USNM 1132874), and dissected male allotype ( USNM 1132875). The type material is deposited in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, USA. The type specimens were collected on 22-September 2002.

Type locality. Brackish water pond of the Coastal Fisheries Research Development Center, Department of Fisheries, Samut Sakhon province, Thailand (13°32'N, 100°16'E). Environmental data of the pond at the time of sampling were as follows: dissolved oxygen 5.6 mg/l, salinity 25 PSU, temperature 29 º C, pH 8, organic matter 3.74%, and a substrate of muddy sand.

Etymology. The specific name honors Dr. Frank D. Ferrari, Research Zoologist and Curator at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, USA, for his achievements in the study of copepods. It is a noun in the genitive singular.

Description of female. Habitus ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 A −C). Body stout, cylindrical with inconspicuous boundary between prosome and urosome in dorsal view. Total body length 490 µm. Prosomite without surface ornamentation other than sensilla. Cephalothorax is the widest part and anal segment is the narrowest of the animal, tapering posteriorly.

Urosome ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 A −B) contains five somites. In dorsal view, Uro3 to 5 furnished with hyaline frills, by having a seminlunar extension middorsally. In ventral view, urosomites without ornamentation other than sensilla. Anal somite ornamented with several rows of fine setules. Anal operculum ornamented with two curved rows of fine setules. Genital double-somite completely fused dorsally and ventrally. Genital apparatus oval in shape, with paired genital apertures located ventrally and copulatory pore located ventromedially. Caudal rami cylindrical, much broader than long, furnished with one row of minute spinules inserted on the distal edge of the anal somite. Each ramus carries seven caudal setae: seta I the outermost aristate-tipped spiniform arising ventrally to the smallest seta II, seta III arising from the cylindrical extension at outer distal corner, seta IV and seta V well developed, seta V the longest not modified ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 C), seta VI arising from a cylindrical extension at inner distal corner, seta VII as long as seta III, located distally close to the inner margin of the ramus.

Rostrum ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 A) of moderate size, articulating with cephalothorax, bell-shaped with two sensilla in the distal fifth.

Antennule ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 A) relatively long, distinctly eight-segmented, the first four segments much larger than the distal four segments. Two aesthetascs, fourth segment bears a long aesthetasc, and distal segment with a shorter aesthetasc. All setae smooth. Armature formula: I (1), II (13), III (6), IV (4+aes), V (2), VI (3), VII (3), VIII (7+aes).

Antenna ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 B) biramous with allobasis, bearing exopod and armed with one inner abexopodal pinnate seta. Exopod two-segmented; Exp1 with one pinnate seta; exp2 with two pinnate and one smooth setae. Endopod one-segmented, with four geniculate setae, one aristate-tipped and two pinnate spines, two pinnate slender setae, and ornamented with two rows of larger and smaller spinules on subdistal rim.

Mandible ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 C). Coxal gnathobase well developed with sharp teeth, one small hollow tube on anterior surface, ornamented with one pinnate seta at distal corner, and some small spinules at proximal corner. Basis without surface ornamentation, with one median unguiform, three spinulose setae, and one slender seta at subdistal margin. Exopod one-segmented, ornamented with one row of tiny spinules inserted on basis, three setae (two spinulose, one smooth), and one setule. Endopod one-segmented, with two spinulose and four smooth setae.

Maxillule ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 D) biramous, praecoxa ornamented with some larger and smaller spinules, and some setules at outer distal corner. Praecoxal arthrite bearing two slender setae on anterior surface, eight sharp spines at inner margin, and one spinulose seta at distal corner. Coxa small with one terminal spinulose seta. Distal edge of basis ornamented with two longitudinal rows of tiny spinules, one trifork-tipped seta, one pinnate spine and four smooth setae. Exopod one-segmented, with two spinulose setae. Endopod onesegmented, with two spinulose and one smooth setae.

Maxilla ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 E) with large syncoxa and three syncoxal endites, ornamented with one row of minute spinules at outer corner. Proximal endite with two spinulose and one smooth spines, median endite with one spinulose and one smooth spine, distal endite with two spinulose and one smooth spines. Basis with five relatively long smooth setae on anterior surface, and one armed claw.

Maxilliped ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 F). Syncoxa with one pinnate, one trifork- and one fourfork-tipped spines, anterior surface furnished with two oblique rows of small spinules. Basis with one median and one subdistal smooth setae; anterior surface ornamented with one row of larger spinules and two short rows of tiny spinules parallel to one row of minute spinules along the inner margin. Endopod one-segmented, with one spinulose terminal claw and two slender setae.

P1 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 A). Praecoxa naked. Coxa ornamented with several rows of larger and smaller spinules on anterior surface. Basis armed with one inner straight strong pinnate spine, some spinules on the surface and at base of an outer pinnate spine; spinules on the distal edge between the origins of the exopod and endopod, and with three setules at the inner magin. Exopod three-segmented; Exp1 and Exp2 armed with one outer pinnate spine each; Exp3 armed with one outer smooth spine, one terminal pinnate spine and two inner geniculate setae. Endopod three-segmented; Enp1 large and elongate, as long as the entire exopod, with 1 inner pectinate seta, Enp2 and Enp3 very short, equal in length, Enp2 with one inner smooth seta, Enp3 armed with one outer pinnate spine, one terminal geniculate seta, and one inner smooth seta. Outer edge of exopod segments, Enp2 and Enp3 densely set with long stout spinules.

P2 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 B). Praecoxa and coxa ornamented with several rows of spinules on anterior surface. Basis armed with one outer pinnate spine, and some spinules at base of inner unguiform, and on the distal edge between the origins of the exopod and endopod, and with some spinules close to base of outer spine. Exopod three-segmented; Exp1 armed with one outer pinnate spine and unguiform; Exp2 armed with one outer pinnate, unguiform, and one inner spinulose seta; Exp3 armed with three outer spines (one smooth, two pinnate), and two terminal spinulose setae. Endopod three-segmented; Enp1 with one inner pectinate seta; enp2 with one inner spinulose seta and unguiform; Enp3 with one outer pinnate spine, two terminal spinulose setae, and one inner pectinate seta. Outer edge of exopod and endopod segments densely set with long stout spinules.

P3 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 C). Praecoxa ornamented with one row and coxa with several rows of small spinules on anterior surface. Basis with an inner unguiform, some spinules at base of one outer plumose seta, spinules on the distal edge between the origins of exopod and endopod. Exopod three-segmented; Exp1 armed with one outer pinnate and one unguiform; Exp2 armed with one outer pinnate and unguiform, and one inner spinulose seta; Exp3 armed with three outer pinnate spines, two terminal and one inner spinulose setae. Endopod threesegmented; Enp1 and Enp2 with one inner spinulose seta each, Enp2 with unguiform; Enp3 armed with one outer pinnate spine, two terminal spinulose setae, and two inner setae (one pectinate, one spinulose). Outer edge of exopod and endopod segments densely set with long stout spinules.

P4 ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 C). Praecoxa naked. Coxa ornamented with several rows of spinules on anterior surface. Basis ornamented with few spinules at base of outer smooth seta, and two minute spinules at inner margin. Exopod much longer than endopod. Exopod three-segmented; Exp1 armed with one outer pinnate spine and unguiform; Exp2 armed with one outer pinnate spine and unguiform, and one inner spinulose seta; Exp3 armed with three outer pinnate spines, two terminal spinulose setae, and two inner setae (one pectinate, one spinulose). Endopod three-segmented; Enp1 and Enp2 with one inner spinulose seta each; Enp2 with outer unguiform; Enp3 armed with one outer pinnate spine, two terminal spinulose setae, and one inner spinulose seta. Outer edge of exopod and endopod segments densely set with long stout spinules. Spine and seta formula as in Table 2.

P6 ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 B) represented as a rectangular extension, bearing one small outer unipinnate spine, one tiny setule, one long inner smooth seta, and one minute innermost spinule.

Description of male. Habitus ( Figs. 13 View FIGURE 13 A −C). Total body length 490 µm. General body shape and size similar to female. Sexual dimorphism expressed in antennule, Mxp, P1 basis and Enp1, P2 endopod, P5, P6, and urosomites.

Urosome ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 A −B) with six somites. In dorsal view, Uro6 furnished with a hyaline frill dorsally and ventrally. In ventral view, Uro4 and 5 ornamented with small spinules at posterior margin each. Anal somite ornamented with one row of small spinules close to Uro6. Anal operculum relatively small, without surface ornamentation. Caudal ramus much broader than long, furnished with one row of spinules inserted on posterior margin of the anal somite ventrally. Armature and ornamentation similar to female.

Rostrum ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 A) of moderate size similar to female.

Antennule ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 A). Haplocerate, distinctly eight-segmented, first four segments much broader than last four segments, and the third segment largest. Two aesthetascs, the larger one arising at anterior margin of the fourth segment and the smaller one on distal segment. All setae smooth. Armature formula: I (1), II (6), III (3), IV (5+aes), V (1), VI (0), VII (2), VIII (5+aes).

Maxilliped ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 D). Syncoxa with one spinulose and two pinnate distal setae, anterior margin furnished with one curved row of small spinules. Basis with one median and one subdistal smooth slender setae, anterior surface ornamented with one row of small spinules near the inner margin. Endopod one-segmented, with one smooth terminal claw and one slender seta.

P1 ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 D) similar to female, except for basis armed with one outer smooth spine, one pinnate spine that is displaced medially, and one inner big ovate-striated knob; Enp1 large, without knobs.

P2 ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 C). Praecoxa naked. Anterior surface of coxa ornamented with several rows of spinules. Basis without surface ornamentation, some spinules near base of outer pinnate spine, and on the distal edge between the origins of the exopod and endopod; inner distal corner unguiform. Exopod three-segmented; Exp1 armed with one outer smooth spine and unguiform; Exp2 with one outer pinnate spine and unguiform, and one inner long spinulose seta; Exp3 armed with three outer pinnate spines, and two terminal spinulose setae. Endopod two-segmented; Enp1 with one inner plumose seta and unguiform; Enp2 transformed into one outer long spine-like attenuation and one inner spinulose seta as long as the outer attenuation, and one medially directed knob close to posterior margin of Enp1; at the base of this knob two inner spinulose setae of unequal lengths.

P5 ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 E) with large baseoendopod bearing one long outer smooth seta, two inner pinnate spines almost equal length. Exopod oval-shaped, armed with two inner pinnate spines, one long median smooth seta, and two outer spines (one unipinnate, one smooth).

P6 ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 B) located on the ventral side of Uro3. Each leg armed with one tiny outer seta, one long median seta, and one inner pinnate spinule.
