( Figs. 33, 34; photo 14)

Material examined: Holotype ♂ card mounted:”Irian Jaya/ Jayawijaya Prov. / leg. A.Riedel 1996”// ”Bommela/ ca 1700–1950m / 4 X”//” Holotype ♂ / Papuabarcinus / intermedius n.sp/ des. E.Heiss 2009” ( CEHI); 1♂ card mounted:”Irian Jaya/ Panian Prov. / leg. A.Riedel ”//”Biologam 2100–2200m / 20–30 XII 1995 ” ( CEHI); 1♀ pinned:” C.Nieuw Guinea / Versteag 1912.13/ illegible name” ( CEHI).

Diagnosis: This species shares characters of P. pauensis (genae nearly reaching apex of antennal segment I) and of P. riedeli n. sp. (short rounded lobes of deltg VI and VII) and is distinguished from both by the combination of these characters. P. intermedius n. sp. differs further from riedeli the closest related species by generally smaller size, posterolateral lobes of pronotum more expanded laterally, its lateral margins sinuate not straight and by distinctly producing pe-angles of deltg II–V in both sexes.

Description: Male, macropterous; general habitus as P.riedeli n. sp. but smaller and more slender.

Head: Longer than wide across eyes (26/16); genae acute and long, nearly reaching apex of antennal segment I; antennae short 2.62x as long as width of head (42/16), length of antennal segments I/II/III/IV = 14/ 8/14/7; postocular tubercle acute directed posterolaterally.

Pronotum: About 2.3x as wide as long at middle (44/19); anterolateral lobe bifurcate with rounded apices, posterior lobe simple, sinuately expanded laterally.

Scutellum: Wider than long (22/15) with a median basal bilobate expansion overlapping the pronotum.

Abdomen: Pe-angles of deltg II conically, those of deltg III–V distinctly angularly producing, pe-angles of deltg VI and VII forming rounded lobes; midlateral apodemal impressions distinct and exposed.

Genitalic structures: Pygophore constricted posteriorly, paratergites VIII as long as pygophore, reaching apex of deltg VII lobes.

Female: Basically as male but of larger size and wider abdomen, tergites VIII and bifurcate tergite X reaching apex of deltg VII lobes.

Measurements: Holotype ♂: Length 11.8 mm; width of abdomen across tergite III 58, IV 53, VII 32; ♂ from Panai Prov.: Length 12.1 mm; head l/w 25/18; pronotum w/l 46/19; scutellum w/l 23/14; length of antennae I/II/III/IV = 15/9/16/8; ratio length of antennae / w head 2.67 (48/18); width of abdomen across tergite III 60; VI 53; VII 35.

Female: Length 13.0 mm; head l/w 27/17; pronotum w/l 48/20; scutellum w/l 25/16; length of antennae I/ II/III/IV = 15/8/14.5/8; ratio length of antennae / w head 2.67 (45.5/17); width of abdomen across Tergite III 65, VI 57; VII 34.

Etymology: intermedius (Latin) indicating its intermediate taxonomic position.

Distribution: The few records are only from the highland of Irian Jaya between 1700–2200 m. Map.2
