Ailurops melanotis Thomas 1898

Ailurops melanotis Thomas 1898 , Novit. Zool., 5: 2.

Type Locality: Indonesia, Talaud Isls, Salebabu Isl, Lirung.

Vernacular Names: Talaud Bear Cuscus.

Distribution: Only found on Salebabu Isl in the Talaud Isls ( Indonesia).

Conservation: Unknown.

Discussion: Formerly included in A. ursinus ; but measurements of the type (and only known preserved) specimen given by Feiler (1977) fall strongly outside those from Sulawesi and offshore islands, and the distinctive colouration and patterning of the type is seen in a second (living) specimen, whose photograph I examined, courtesy of R. Wirth.
