TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, Espirito Santo, between Itapemirin and Iconha Rivers .
DISTRIBUTION: S.W. Nayarit and Tamaulipas ( Mexico) to Peru, N. Argentina and S. Brazil; Guianas; Trinidad; Tobago; Grenada (Lesser Antilles).
COMMENT: Includes carteri; see Corbet and Hill, 1980:65, but see Bogan, 1978, J. Mammal., 59:520-524. Neotype designated by LaVal, 1973, Bull. Los Ang. Cty. Mus. Nat. Hist. Sci. Soc., 15. Reviewed by Wilson and LaVal, 1974, Mamm. Species, 39:1-3.
