Type Locality: Brazil, Amazonas, Altamira, right bank Rio Juruá (68 o 54’W, 06 o 35’S) GoogleMaps .
Vernacular Names: Gardner's Spiny-rat.
Distribution: W Amazonia of Brazil and N Boliva between the Rio Juruá and the Rio Madeira.
Discussion: Weksler et al. (2001) erroneously cited Patton (1987) as placing in guyannensis group; molecular analysis suggests affinities with pattoni and kulinae ( Patton et al., 2000) . Karyotype has 2n=40 and FN=56.
