Material examined. INFUECO stations: BC1 0611, 1 specimen, 86 m depth; BC10 0710, 1 specimen, 219 m depth. INCOECO stations: BC10 0611, 1 specimen, 492 m depth; BC2 0710, 3 specimens, 201 m depth; BC3 0710, 1 specimen, 220 m depth.

Remarks. The first record of this species in the Canary Islands was included in the genus Opisthodonta ( Palmero et al. 2005) . The distribution of the aciculae with progressive development in the anterior region of the body is typical of S. pterochaeta , aciculae arranged in pairs from chaetigers 1–13, with a single needle from chaetiger 14; there is a progressive decrease in the size of the aciculae from chaetigers 14 to 18, remaining reduced until the end of the body.

Habitat. Subtidal sandy substrates, of various granulometries, from coarse to muddy sands ( Parapar et al. 1993), amphioxus sands ( Campoy 1982), and in Cymodocea nodosa meadows from shallow bottoms to about 30 m depth. In the samples studied, the maximum depth was 550 m.

Distribution. East Atlantic Ocean, from the North Sea to the Strait of Gibraltar ( San Martín & Hutchings 2006), with southernmost distribution in the Canary Islands.
