Type Locality: Uruguay, Maldonado Dept., Maldonado.
Vernacular Names: Uruguay Swamp Rat.
Distribution: Southernmost Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Distribution and morphological identity reviewed by Massoia and Fornes (1964) and Hershkovitz (1966 c), including aquaticus . Review of museum specimens indicates that only a single species, S. tumidus , is present in Uruguay (González, 1994). Also see remarks under S. aquaticus .
