Genus Daternomina Neboiss

Daternomina Neboiss, 2003: 65 .

Type species. Ecnomina irrorata Kimmins by original designation.

Diagnosis. Key characters of the genus are females with a pair of large rounded or ‘tongue-shaped’ lobes on sternite VIII; adults with posterolateral warts aligned longitudinally and forewing fork 2 usually with nygma. Larvae with pale sclerotisation on head and nota; meso-and metanotum partly sclerotised, membranous along midline; head with pointed needle-like ligula.

Description (after Neboiss 2003). Adults medium to large sized. Head dorsally with posterior setal warts positioned longitudinally; scutellum heart shaped ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–6 ). Forewing length about 2.7–3.3 times width: male 3.5–5.6 mm; female 4.2–5.8 mm. Wing venation: forewing, R 1 forked, forks 2, 3, 4 and 5 present; fork 2 usually sessile, occasionally with short footstalk, usually with nygma, length fork about 1.2–2.1 times length fork 3; fork 3 usually with relatively long footstalk, fork ranges from 1.3–10 times length footstalk, length footstalk ranges from about 0–3.2 times length cross-vein m, r-m and m displaced at fork 3 by between 1–2 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 shorter than fork 3 and fork 5 longer than fork 3. Hindwing length about 2.6–3.3 times width; forks 2, 3 and 5 present, fork 2 usually sessile, occasionally with short footstalk; four anal veins present, three longer and one shorter, these veins sometimes curved ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–6 ). Male genitalia variable in form, although some species fall into distinct groups. Female genitalia with sternite VIII bearing a pair of large ‘tongue-shaped’ lobes; segments IX and X both relatively long and robust without many obvious hairs; segment IX tapered slightly distally ( Figs 55–62 View FIGURES 55–62 ).

Larvae consistently with pale yellow sclerotisation on head and nota; head rounded laterally, with pointed ligula; meso-and metanotum partly sclerotised, membranous along midline ( Cartwright 1997; fig 1.3).

In this relatively new genus, 16 species are known from southern and eastern Australia- south Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Females have only been associated for eight species altogether, including two females from a group of five species which differ slightly in wing characters from the other eleven species .
