Diagnosis. This new species has been confused with Mataeomera obliquisigna . Their differences are given in Table 1. It is also similar to Mataeomera esbiahni Sohn et Ronkay, 2001 , from South Korea, but differs from the latter in the forewing patterns, viz. with narrower submarginal shade; larger discal spot; more sharply zigzagged postmedian line; broader brown fascia between median and postmedian line in some variations ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–4 ); in male genitalia, by the presence of three digitate processes in the apex of the valvae and two teeth in the distal area of phallus; in female genitalia, with a deep postmedial cleavage on sternite VIII.

Description. Head—Scales of vertex dark grayish brown with brownish white or pale orange tip; frons dark brown. Antennae filiform in both sexes, 1/2 as long as forewing; scape brownish white; flagellomeres dark brown dorsally, brownish white laterally, naked ventrally. Labial palpi slightly ascending; 1 st segment 1/5 as long as 2 nd, dark brown, speckled with pale gray; 2 nd segment dark brown, densely speckled with pale gray dorsally, with triangular scale tuft broadened distally; 3 rd segment as long as 1 st, dark brown. Thorax—Patagia dark brown, brownish white posteromarginally, speckled with brownish white in basal half; tegula and mesonotum pale grayish brown, speckled with brownish white. Forelegs and mid legs dark brown dorsally, pale gray, speckled with dark grayish brown ventrally; tarsomeres with pale gray ring distally. Hindlegs dark brown, speckled with pale gray; tibia with broad, oblique dark brown band laterally; tarsomeres with pale gray ring distally. Forewing length 12–16 mm (n=42), subtriangular, pale brownish gray; subbasal line only in costal area, broadly dark brown; antemedian line dark brown, sinuous; median and postmedian line dark brown, zigzagged, interspace of both lines dark brownish gray or purplish gray; discal spot dark brown or black; submarginal line broadly dark grayish brown, zigzagged, intermittent; adterminal dashes dark brown; terminal line pale grayish brown; fringe alternate dark brown and dark brownish gray bars. Hindwings pale brownish gray in basal 2/5; median and postmedian lines dark brown, zigzagged, interspace of both lines dark brownish gray or dark gray; discal spot dark brown or black; two dark brown, intermittent lines in submarginal area; adterminal line and fringe alternate dark brown and dark brownish gray bars; terminal line brownish white. Abdomen dark grayish brown, speckled with pale grayish brown dorsally, pale gray ventrally. Male genitalia ( Figs. 7–8 View FIGURES 5–9 )—Uncus slender, falcate, pointed apically, as long as tegumen. Tegumen triangular. Valva elongate, slightly broadened to base; semi-elliptical lobes over the middle of costa; harpe with subtriangular basal protrusion, distal process broadly clubbed apically; apical processes digitate, membranous; saccular process spiniform, as long as apical process. Phallus almost straight, slightly broadened distally at ductus ejaculatorius, with two teeth near the apical end; cornutus absent. Female genitalia ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 5–9 )—Papillae anales inverted-subtrapezoidal, setose; apophyses posteriores slender, two times longer than papillae anales. Abdominal segment VIII as a sclerotized, complete ring, with a rectangular expansion between apophyses anteriores; anteroventral margin sinuate, convex medially; apophyses anteriores short. Ductus bursae as long as corpus bursae, with an incomplete scletotized ring medially, interior wall sclerotized in anterior 2/5; antrum 1/2 of the length of ductus bursae, flattened, slightly broadened to ostium bursae; medial cleavage running through 5/6 of antrum length, broadened to oval anteriorly, two lobes approximated in posterior 2/3, convex posteromarginally; a processes arising from medial cleavage of antrum, slightly broadened to base, bifid apically. Corpus bursae oval, with minute winkles; cervix bursae 2/ 5 as long as ductus bursae; signum as an inverted-subtriangular, spinulate zone.

Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima Is., Yakushima Is.). Literature localities include Yokohama; Yoshino, Yamato [= Nara Pref.] ( Wileman, 1912).

Hosts. Probably lichens ( Sugi, 1959; Yamamoto, 1965; Yamamoto & Sugi, 1987).
