Comments. Mapuchemyia Woodley, 2001 has only two described species, M. krausei from Chile and M. australis ( Aubertin, 1930) from Argentina, but its generic and specific limits, as in many chiromyzines genera, are poorly understood. Most features used to distinguish the genera, such as the presence or absence of the wing vein M 3, R 4 free, dichoptic or holoptic eyes in males, body coloration (mainly on scutum is taken into consideration), and pilosity vary quite often between species across different genera. James (1975a, as Hylorus ) pointed out that the genus could be separated by a free R 4, meaning not fused to R 5. However, this is also seen in some species of Nonacris and would be constant only in M. australis , while highly variable in M. krausei (according to Oliveira & Pujol-Luz, 2000a, a free R 4 is absent in females). Additionally, hind tarsomeres enlarged are only found in M. krausei (see James 1975a; Oliveira & Pujol-Luz 2000a). There is no mention to the number of antennal flagellomeres in the original descriptions, but according to Oliveira & Pujol (2000a), M. australis has one, while M. krausei has eight flagellomeres. In the South American fauna, Tana Reed, 1888 and Stenimantia Enderlein, 1932 , both also from Chile, are the only chiromyzine genera with one and eight flagellomeres, respectively. Although Oliveira & Pujol-Luz have claimed the presence of a vein M 3 reduced for the genus, this is variable and is also present in Hylorops philippii . Given that, it seems that the two species of Mapuchemyia are not congeneric and may be associated with other genera, but the types have not been examined.

krausei ( Philippi, 1865)

Hylorus krausei Philippi, 1865: 728 , pl. XXVI, fig. 33 (habitus dorsal).

= Hylorus kraussi Brauer, 1882: 88 . Incorrect subsequent spelling.

Syntypes: male, female, but the quantity of each sex is not stated (they should be deposited in MNNC, but were not found; Woodley, 2001: 50 considered them destroyed). Type locality: Chile , Valdivia Province, near Corral. Distr .: Maule Region: Talca Province (Talca) ; Ñuble Region: Itata Province ( 5–6 km N of Cobquecura ) , Diguillín Province (Las Trancas) ; Biobío Region: Arauco Province (Caramávida, Cerros de Nahuelbuta , W of Angol) ; Araucanía Region: Malleco Province ( Cordillera Lonquimay , La Fusta,) ; Los Ríos Region: Valdivia Province (Corral) ; Los Lagos Region: Osorno Province ( Refugio La Picada , Volcán Osorno) , Llanquihue Province: ( Casa Pangue ). Argentina (without precise locality) (see Woodley, 2001: 50) .

Comments. It seems that this species exclusively shares eight antennal flagellomeres with Stenimantia and also probably with Hylorops Enderlein, 1921 , while supposedly Mapuchemyia australis (from Argentina) has only one (see Oliveira & Pujol-Luz 2000a). The only specimens (male and female) referred to this species besides the syntypes are given in Oliveira & Pujol-Luz (2000a), currently deposited in the MZUSP collection.
