Panicum crus-galli Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 1: 56. 1753 View Cited Treatment .
"Habitat in Europae, Virginiae cultis." RCN: 480.
Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 117. 1908): Kalm, Herb. Linn. No. 80.18 ( LINN) .
Current name: Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv. ( Poaceae ).
Note: Specific epithet spelled “Crusgalli” in the protologue.
Hitchcock (in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 22: 140. 1920) reconsidered his earlier (1908) type choice, excluding the American plant in favour of a European concept for the species and Wiegand (in Rhodora 23: 55. 1921) concurred with Hitchcock’s reinterpretation. Baum (in Canad. J. Bot. 45: 1846. 1967) also disagreed with the choice of a Kalm collection as type, though on the spurious grounds that Kalm’s name was not explicitly cited in the protologue. However, the Kalm collection is clearly original material for this name, and Hitchcock’s 1908 type choice has priority.
