labiosa View in CoL

Ampullaria labiosa Philippi, 1852 View in CoL . See Cowie & Thiengo (2003: 67).

Additional remarks. Synonym of flagellata Say View in CoL (Central American), teste Pain (1964: 227), followed by Cowie & Thiengo. More conservatively considered here as incertae sedis as it was thought to be Asian by Reeve (1856c: pl. 16, fig. 74), Paetel (1887: 479), Gaudion (1880: 32) and Kobelt (1912b: 103).

linnaei

Ampullaria Linnaei Philippi, 1852 View in CoL . Additional detail of type material —probable holotype [by monotypy: “eines... Exemplares” ( Philippi 1852a: 62; Code, Art. 72.4.1.1)]: MNHNCL 15945 (1 spm., old number 61.049). See Cowie & Thiengo (2003: 67).

Additional remarks. Philippi (1852a: 62) stated that Hanley first sent him a drawing of a specimen of ampullacea Linnaeus View in CoL in the Linnaean collection (LSL 546), but that he then obtained an actual specimen, supposedly of the same species (he did not say from where he obtained it). However, Philippi (1852a: 62) considered that this specimen was not ampullacea Linnaeus View in CoL and gave it the new name, linnaei. It would seem reasonable to conclude that the illustration of Philippi (1852a: pl. 20, fig. 6) was of this shell, not a copy of Hanley’s drawing of LSL 546, as surmised in a note by S.P. Dance associated with LSL 546. According to Dance’s note, T. Pain agreed with this supposition that Philippi’s illustration was not taken from Hanley’s drawing. MNHNCL 15945 is an excellent match for Philippi’s figure of linnaei. Pending further research, and following Pain’s suggestion, as reported in Dance’s note, LSL 546 is here considered a syntype of ampullacea Linnaeus View in CoL (since Linnaeus referenced illustrations of other shells) and MNHNCL 15945 the probable holotype [by monotypy] of linnaei. Synonym of lineata Spix in Wagner ( Pomacea View in CoL , South American), teste G.B. Sowerby III (1909: 354), followed by Cowie & Thiengo. Synonym of ampullacea Linnaeus View in CoL ( Pila View in CoL , Thailand), teste Kobelt (1912b: 76) and Brandt (1974: 49), which was not noted by Cowie & Thiengo.
