Diagnosis

Mesoscutum, frons and vertex predominantly yellowish to yellowish brown; flagellum comparatively stout (figure 44); mesoscutum and scutellum flattened.

Material examined

H: X (in USNM) on slide, same slide also with two male paratypes; 8 female and 11 male paratypes (on one slide, in USNM) .

Additional material. 18 X 6 W from Costa Rica (in ANIC, BMNH, LUZM, INBio, MIUCR), 1 X from Brazil (BMNH), 1 X from Puerto Rico (mentioned by Dozier in his original description, see below, in USNM).

Hosts Aleurothrixus floccosus on Guaiacum officinale (Zygophyllaceae) .

Distribution

Argentina (LaSalle and Schauff, 1994), Brazil (new record), Costa Rica (new record), Haiti (Dozier, 1932), Puerto Rico (Dozier, 1932), USA (LaSalle and Schauff, 1994).

Remarks

The extension of pale versus dark parts varies slightly between male and female. Males are generally darker than females, specifically on occiput, anterior quarter of mesoscutum, scutellum and propodeum which are ± brown.

In his original description of aleurothrixi, Dozier mentioned additional material not included in the description and hence not type material: a single female from same host as type series but on ‘Lignum-vitae’ (i.e. Guaiacum officinale ) and from Puerto Rico, and a series of 23 females from same host and from Cuba. The female from Puerto Rico is presumably a slightly infuscate female of aleurothrixi . However, the specimens from Cuba have head and mesosoma ± dark, and due to the fact that there is no extensive variation of the colour in the material at our disposal it is difficult to say if these very dark specimens actually belong to aleurothrixi . More material is required before this can be settled.
