Material. Holotype male, 7.8 x 8.6 mm, station Me 5/230–KD2, 12°43.5'N, 43°14.8'E, 214–277 m, Gulf of Aden, coll. "Meteor", 5 Mar 1987 ( SMF).

Description. Carapace sub­rectangular, width similar to length, margins sub­parallel, surface weakly areolate, covered with pavement of small rounded closely packed granules. Carapace regions well marked. Well marked frontal groove separates weak epigastric areas with small tubercles, divides to define mesogastric area containing small median tubercle. Two protogastric tubercles are largest on carapace. Metagastric area swollen, weakly divided, but without tubercles. Urogastric, cardiac areas well defined, without tubercles. Branchial area dominated by 4 tubercles: small epibranchial tubercle, similar mesobranchial tubercle, 2 smaller metabranchial tubercles. Total of 13 areolate tubercles on the whole carapace: 6 on each side, 1 unpaired median tubercle. From side view, carapace profile evenly convex.

Rostrum bidentate, teeth small scarcely projecting. Two small, dorsally directed supraorbital tubercles behind rostrum, rest of orbital margin covered with small granules, small suborbital tubercle just visible dorsally. Orbits obliquely arranged, clearly exposed dorsally.

Anterolateral margin begins below level of postorbital corner, armed with 5 sub­equal teeth, third and fifth largest, fourth weakest. First anterolateral tooth preceded by 2 very small, closely spaced hepatic teeth, hardly visible dorsally, form anterior corner of carapace. Behind branchial groove with 2 well developed blunt posterolateral teeth, last forming posterior corner of carapace.

Pereopods covered in small granules as on carapace. Cheliped carpus with small tubercles on inner and outer proximal margins, 3 closely spaced small tubercles along outer distal margin. Propodus with 2 small tubercles along inner, 3 similar tubercles along outer dorsal margins. Fingers not down­curved, gaping for most of length, 6 teeth on fixed finger, 2 low teeth on tip of moveable finger. At rest, fingers slot in beside bases of third maxillipeds that are covered with dense mass of fine setae. Margins of second to fourth pereopods tuberculate, fifth pereopod reduced, hidden under posterolateral carapace corner in dorsal view.

Surface of abdomen granulate, margins setose, abdomen only loosely held against sternum. No effective abdominal locking mechanism, uropod plates fill about half of lateral margin of sixth segment, adjacent to slightly elevated group of small granules on coxa of second pereopod. Edges of penultimate abdominal segment lie alongside similar group of granules on coxae of third pereopods which restrict lateral movement of abdomen.

Etymology. The species name is derived from the German word for devil, alluding to the frontal appearance of the animal. The name is used as a noun in apposition.

This is the only species known from the Indian Ocean. It was obtained from a depth of 214– 277 m.
