Abies marocana Trabaud (1906: 154)

The protologue of Abies marocana ( Trabaud 1906: 154) includes a diagnosis in French “Feuilles aiguës, épaisses à la base, plus larges et plus longues que dans l’ A. Pinsapo , ne se tordant pas à la base pour infléchir sur les rameaux, hypoderme double, stomates sur les deux faces de la feuille, mais en moindre quantité sur la face supérieure; glandes résinifères sur l’hypoderme inférieur; còne non vu”, followed by a locality, date and collector (“Les montagnes du sud de Tétuan, à Chechaouen janvier 1906 [Joly]”), an illustration (a photo) (“T. LIII (1906). Pl. III”, identified as “ Picea marocana Trabut. ”), accompanied by an explanation (“Deux rameaux d’ Abies marocana Trab. gr. nat.”), and some comments with several differences among this new species and A. pinsapo and A. numidica . The protologue also includes a reference to a gathering: “M. Joly, qui a explore dernièrement les montganes de Tétuan et qui y a découvert le Viscum cruciatum sur l’Olivier, nous a fait parvenir ces jours-ci de la meme region des rameaux d’un Abies ”.

Farjon (2010: 112, 2017) mentioned “Type not designated”.Among the original elements, the illustration provided in the protologue can be considered original material. In addition, we have located at MPU two relevant specimens that belong to the gathering details mentioned in the protologue. Thus, this material can be treated as syntypes (Art. 9.6 and Art. 40 Note 1 of the ICN, see Turland et al. 2018).

The specimen with barcode MPU007733 bears four stems (two of these perhaps are the ones that were photographed and included in the protologue) and leaves, an envelope with leaves, and a label annotated as “Herbier d’Algérie / Abies marocana Trab. / Type! / Chechaouen / Zone Esp. Maroc / leg. A. Joly 1905 / D. L. Trabut ” ( Fig. 5 ). The specimen with barcode MPU007735 bears six stems with leaves and separate leaves, and a label annotated as: “Herbier d’Algérie / Abies marocana Trab. / (Type!) / Montagne Chechaouen / Maroc Esp. / legit Joly / L. In conclusion, among the original elements mentioned above (the image and specimens at MPU), and according to Art. 9.12 of the ICN, we designate the specimen at MPU with barcode MPU007733 as the lectotype of the name Abies marocana .
