Included Genera. Libythea Fabricius 1807 [Old World], type species: Libythea celtis ( Laicharting [1782]) ; Libytheana Michener 1943 [New World], type species: Libytheana carinenta ( Cramer 1777) .
Diagnosis. Morphological features that unite Libytheinae include: foreleg reduced in male, but not female; lobe on patagium; and mesoscutellum overhanging metascutum (Kawahara 2009).
Remarks. The Libytheinae has been frequently attributed to Duponchel (1844), Westwood (1851) and Bates (1861). Although Bates (1861) was the first to treat snout butterflies as a subfamily, the authorship of the taxon should be attributed to Boisduval et al. (1832) because this was the first work that established a family-group name based on the type genus, Libythea . Latter work used the name ‘Libythides’, from the incorrect stem of which it can be clearly inferred that the authors were basing the family-group name on the type genus, Libythea . For this reason, the stem is corrected, the suffix ‘-inae’ added, and the family-group name attributed to Boisduval et al. (1832). ‘Libythides’ first appears in Boisduval et al.’s work at the top of plate 1, which illustrates the immature stages of Libythea celtis . Boisduval et al. (1832) numbered the plates sequentially under each family, and therefore this plate is the fifteenth plate in the publication.
