Subgenus Lophyra

Lophyra (Lophyra) cancellata candei ( Chevrolat, 1845)

Chevrolat described this subspecies as Cicindela candei from the environs of Macao. Chaudoir (1865), Dover & Ribeiro (1923), Horn (1930), Wiesner (1992), Hua (2002), Puchkov & Matalin (2003) and Shook & Wiesner (2006) list this subspecies for Hong Kong. Material: 1 ex. Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 1.v.07 (JWPC); 1 ex. Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 6.v.06 (GSPC); Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 15.v.05, on sandy beach close to where streams enter the sea. Not present a week later; 2 exx. Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 24.v.07 (JWPC); 2 exx. Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 5.vi.07 (GSPC). Biology: Imago found May to June. This species can be abundant on rivers with sandy banks and adjacent beaches at river mouths. In spring and summer 2014 and 2015, the populations seem to have died out at Mui Wo and Shap Long, Lantau (a site where this species used to be quite common).
