Selviria anneae Stebnicka , new species

( Fig. 1 View Fig )

Description. Length 4.8–5.0 mm, greatest width 2.0– 2.1 mm. Body ( Fig. 1 View Fig ) elongate, strongly shining, glabrous; color light castaneous or rusty brown; sides of pronotum and elytra slightly transparent. Head broad, weakly convex medially; clypeal margin upturned, rounded on each side of shallow median emargination; gena right-angled, protruding; surface of head shining, almost impunctate except a few fine punctures on vertex. Pronotum convex at middle, sides widely

explanate and sulcate along upturned lateral margin, edge fringed with short pale setae, base slightly sinuate and finely margined at middle; surface punctures mixed fine and moderate, shallow, widely spaced in anterior disc, closest at middle of base, vanishing laterally and lacking on sides and inside marginal sulcus. Scutellum relatively long, triangular. Elytra widest at apical third, shining, elytral margin from humeral umbone to apex widely explanate, slightly upturned; striae fine, shallowly finely punctate, 10 th stria indicated by row of coarser punctures; intervals convex, impunctate. Ventral surface shining; mesosternum shagreened; space between mesocoxae smaller than width of mesofemur; metasternum convex, midline impressed, disc minutely punctate, lateral metasternal triangle shallow; abdominal sternites minutely fluted along sutures with smooth impunctate surface; pygidium broad, grooved along apical margin, surface finely granulate. Profemur with perimarginal groove, protibia hidden in repose, relatively short with three lateral teeth; meso- and metatibiae unusually thin, hairless, apical fringe of 6–8 short setae, apical spurs slender, accessory spine absent; basal tarsomere of metatarsus subequal in length to upper tibial spur and to following three tarsomeres combined.

In the male, terminal spur of protibia is hooked inwardly at the tip.

Type Material. Holotype female (HAHC), labelled ‘‘BRAZIL, Minas Gerais, Sete Lagoas, Nov. 1962, a la luz, coll. Martinez,’’ my red label ‘‘Holotype’’ and yellow label ‘‘ Selviria anneae Det. Z. Stebnicka.’’ Paratype male (HAHC), labelled ‘‘BRAZIL, Xingu, Mato Grosso, XI.1961, coll. Alvarenga and Werner.’’

Affinity. Selviria anneae is similar in a general appearance to S. matogrossoensis from which it differs primarily by having the sides of pronotum and the elytral margins more widely explanate and the pronotal punctures larger and less close.

Remarks. I designate here the female holotype, because the single male is partially disarticulated. There are no sexual external differences other than mentioned in the description.

Etymology. The species is named in honour of my friend, Anne T. Howden.
