Identification. Test creamish; conspicuous naked interambulacra, naked zone pink to light lilac, with yellow patches, bordered by red line. Spines long, fusiform, green and spotted or banded reddish.

Global maximum size. Maximum test diameter 40 mm.

Global distribution. East coast of South Africa to Philippines at 70–300 m depth ( Mortensen 1935; Schultz 2010).

Remarks. Samples identified through this study extend previously known distribution northwards towards southern Mozambique border. Color may distinguish the two Coelopleurus species; the naked interambulacra zones of C. maillardi are violet with orange tints bordered by a red line; whereas C. interruptus has a brown naked patch with transverse violet bands and lateral white lines.
