Diagnosis. Females (the only sex known) of this large new species may readily be separated from those of all other known species in the genus by the distinctively glossy body surface, presence of only a very few small spines on the mesonotum and longitudinal row of very densely spaced slender spines along the meso- and metapleurae.

Etymology. The name (splendidus lat. = glabrous, glossy) refers to the distinctive glossy body surface of this large new species. Feminine.

Description. ♀♀ ( Fig. 77F View FIGURE 77 ): The unique holotype is incomplete and lacks for legs with only the right front and hind leg present. The somewhat shrivelled body suggests the specimen has provisionally been preserved in spirits.

Large (body length incl. subgenital plate ca. 200.0 mm) and slender for the genus with a glossy body surface, sparsely spinose mesonotum, densely but rather minutely spinose meso- and metapleurae and a very long, lancet-like subgenital plate that projects greatly beyond the apex of the abdomen. General colour of the unique holotype ochreous mid to dark brown with a slight olive wash, the hind leg somewhat lighter in colour rather yellowish grey and with the base of the femur dark yellow. Meso- and metapleurae dull yellowish, with the mesonotal spines dark yellow and the pleural spines dark olive. Head with a broad, washed olive brown postocular streak; eyes dark yellow and irregularly flecked with brown. Antennae olive mid brown dorsally and wholly black ventrally.

Head ( Fig. 78A View FIGURE 78 ): Ovoid, 1.2x longer than wide and broadest behind the eyes, vertex moderately convex, smooth and merely with a very slightly impressed coronal line. Area between the eyes slightly swollen and with a shallow transverse impression to the posterior. Eyes fairly prominent, almost circular in outline, projecting hemispherical and their diameter contained almost exactly 2x in length of genae. Antennae very long and reaching to posterior margin of abdominal segment VII. Scapus compressed dorsoventrally, roughly 1.5x longer than wide, somewhat narrowed at the base, carinate laterally and the lateral margins very gently rounded. Pedicellus round in cross-section, slightly tapered towards the apex and a little more than half the length of scapus. III notably longer than pedicellus, IV only half the length of III.

Thorax: Pronotum shorter and narrower than head, about 1.6x longer than wide and roughly rectangular. Median line slightly impressed in anterior half and the transverse median sulcus gently curved, shallow and almost reaching lateral margins of segment. Mesothorax 7.3x longer than prothorax and almost wholly uniform in diameter with only a slight widening posteriorly. Mesonotum with an indistinct medio-longitudinal line, a fine longitudinal lateral carina parallel to lateral margins and throughout the anterior three-quarters armed with about 13 small to medium, anteriad directed spines ( Fig. 78A View FIGURE 78 ). Metanotum about 9x longer than wide, almost parallel-sided and entirely smooth except for a very fine longitudinal lateral carina, that bears a few minute tubercles. Meso- and metapleurae armed with a longitudinal row of closely placed, slender and unevenly sized, straight and pointed spines; these notably less pronounced on metapleurae and a few much smaller pale cream spinules below the anterior row of spines. Meso- and metasternum smooth.

Table 67: Measurements of Spinocloidea splendida sp. n.

Abdomen: Median segment transverse, very short and only about 0.15x the length of metanotum. Segment II roughly 3x longer than median segment and about 2.3x longer than wide. Exact length relations of following segment difficult to define with confidence, IV and V longer than III and VII only about one-third the length of II. All possibly more or less uniform in width in the life insect. All terga smooth except for a slight longitudinal lateral carina; VII with the posterolateral angles weakly rounded and deflexed. All sterna with a rather distinct and ledge-like longitudinal lateral carina, the praeopercular organ on sternum VII formed by a rounded posterior excrescence of the two longitudinal carinae. Terga VII–X notably narrower than preceding and roughly uniform in width. Tergum VIII about 0.4x the length of VII and about 1.5x longer than wide with the lateral margins gently rounded and deflexed. IX about three-quarters the length of VIII, roughly rectangular and 1.2x longer than wide. Anal segment shorter than IX, with an obtuse medio-longitudinal carina and the posterior margin broadly rounded but irregular in outline. Epiproct triangular, strongly tectate longitudinally and projecting by almost one-third the length of anal segment. Cerci elongate, somewhat compressed laterally, slender and gradually tapering towards a pointed and somewhat incurved apex; roughly reaching to tip of epiproct. Gonapophyses VIII projecting beyond tip of abdomen almost by length of anal segment and almost straight with only the extreme tip slightly upcurved. Subgenital plate long, lanceolate, distinctly canaliculate longitudinally, roughly uniform in width and with a narrow but obtuse tip; projecting over apex of abdomen by notably more than the three terminal abdominal terga taken together ( Fig. 78N View FIGURE 78 ).

Legs: Long, slender and at least the front and hind legs wholly unarmed. Profemora as long as pro- and mesothorax combined, metafemora almost reaching to posterior margin of abdominal segment V and metatibiae slightly projecting beyond tip of subgenital plate. Pro- and metabasitarsi slender and somewhat longer than remaining tarsomeres combined.
