Description of adult. Colouration (Fig. 1). Body bright red, including ventral side of prosternal collar, posterior portion of pleuron I, dorsal half of posterior pleural flange I, ventrites (except anterior portion of ventrite VII). Coxae and trochanters dark red. The following body parts are black: antennae except basal half of antennomere 4, vertex medially along its entire length, median spot on callar lobe (narrow anteriorly, much wider posteriorly), median spot extending along the entire length of pronotal lobe, scutellum, clavus (except base), lunulate spot on corium along the claval margin from 1/3 of claval length towards its apex, apical part of corium, ca. ventral half of pleuron I and posterior pleural flange I, pleuron II including posterior pleural flange II, pleuron III, legs, anterior portion of ventrite VII, pygophore, and stack-shaped projections on valvifer II. Basal half of antennomere IV and posterior pleural flange III white. Trichobothrial areas on ventrites inconspicuous, concolorous with remaining suface of ventrites.

Structure. See the generic description.

Punctation. Pronotal lobe, clavus and corium (except costal margin) with dense but minute and shallow punctures, concolorous with the background (red or black). Head without punctures.

FIGURES. 1–2. Australodindymus nigroruber gen. et sp. nov.: 1— paratype, male; 2—5th instar nymph.

Description of 5th instar larva (probably of male). Colouration (Fig. 2). Head (except lateral sides and paraclypei), antennifers, antennae (except basal half of antennomere 4), labium, pronotal collar (except lateral margins), narrow longitudinal median stripe on callar lobe, pronotal lobe, scutellum, wing pads, pleura II–III, pleural flange II, supralobes I–III (with reddish tinge), legs, zygotergites (except wide longitudinal median stripes), and dorso-abdominal scent glands black. Zygosternites V–VII anteriorly with blackish transversal stripes. Lateral sides of head (except antenniferes and paraclypei), pronotal collar laterally, callar lobe, lateral margins of pronotum, prosternal collar (medially partly black), pleuron I (except somewhat blackened base of its ventral portion), pronotal epipleuron, pleural flange I, posterior portion of pleural flange III, wide median longitudinal stripe on zygotergites, ventral and dorsal laterotergites, zygosternites (except blackened anterior stripes on zygosternites V–VII) red. Basal half of antennomere 4 white.

Structure. Labium reaching ventrite IV. Pronotum trapezoid; anterior margin concave, lateral margins straight, evenly diverging posteriad towards base; posterior margin horizontally truncate. Callar and pronotal lobe with narrow ecdysial suture. Dorso-abdominal scent glans large, round elevated, the third pair of them largest. Profemora apically with two denticles.

Measurements (mm). Body length 8.37; head: width (including eyes) 1.57, interocular width 0.94; lengths of antennomeres: 1—1.62, 2—1.57, 3—1.24, 4—1.67; pronotum: length 1.00, width 1.94; length of wing pad 2.00.

Differential diagnosis. Australodindymus nigroruber gen. et sp. nov. is easy to distinguish from all other species of Australian Pyrrhocoridae by its conspicuous colouration (bright red and black, but without median black spot).

Etymology. The species epithet is composed of the Latin adjectives niger, - a, - um, meaning black and ruber, - a, - um, meaning red, referring to the colouration of the species.

Biology. The species seems to live in gorges. Adults were collected in August and November, the single 5th instar larva was collected on August 29. According to label data, one female was collected on Cassia glutinosa (Caesalpiniaceae) .

Distribution. Known only from the Pilbara region, West Australia.
