Oropezella falcata View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 39–45 View FIGURES 39 – 45 , 115)

Diagnosis. Scutum dark brown entirely covered with brownish scattered pruinescence or with a wide bare area on presutural region; coxae and trochanters pale yellow; legs pale brown to yellow except hind tibia and tarsomeres 3–5 of fore and midlegs brown.

Etymology. From the Latin falx (sickle), in reference to the sickle-shaped left surstylus, in lateral view.

Description. Holotype male. Body: 4.0 mm. Wing: 4.1 mm. Head: antenna brown located slightly above middle of head; scape as long as pedicel; postpedicel conical, twice longer than wide, as long as scape and pedicel combined; stylus apical, bare and long, about 2.7 times length of antenna. Ocellar triangle weakly protuberant; 2 pairs of ocellar setae, anterior pair elongate, proclinate 45º, posterior pair thin and short. Holoptic; frons long, more than two-thirds length of face. Proboscis yellow; palpus brown bearing 1 long apical and 1 shorter lateral bristle. Postcranium black with pale brown pruinescence; postoculars elongate, scattered, upper setae longest. Thorax: entirely covered with scattered brown pruinescence on scutum and gray pruinescence on mesopleuron; dark brown in ground color. Bristles thin, short and scattered; acr and dc uniserial. Differentiated bristles: 3 npl (2 lower short and discreet and 1 long and robust above); posterior dc not distinct from anterior dc; 1 pal short and thin; 1 long and strong apical sctl and 1 lateral bristle weaker and about two-thirds length of apical. Wing (Fig. 115): sub-hyaline with purple and green iridescence; R1 meeting C before middle of wing; cell dm emitting 2 veins; cell cu p present. Legs: coxae and trochanters pale yellow; femora, fore and mid tibia and hind femur pale brown to yellow; hind tibia brown; tarsi brown except tarsomeres 1 and 2 of fore and mid legs paler near base. Legs with short and weak bristles: mid tibia with 1A at middle and 1D near base, both short and weak; 1A rather strong near apex and some V bristles elongated on hind femur. Abdomen: shiny with pruinescence only on tergite 8; tergites and sternites brown. Bristles brown rather elongate, scattered and thin. Terminalia: hypandrium rather elongate, about 1.6 times longer than wide with slightly concave apex ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ); epandrium short, not deeply cleft dorsally, epandrial lamellae broadly fused basally ( Fig. 40 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ); left epandrial lamella slightly shorter than right, with dorsoapical process short and widened apically in dorsal view ( Figs 40, 42 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ); right surstylus slightly shorter than left, narrow basally and broadened distally, inner surface smooth ( Figs 39, 40, 43 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ); left surstylus long, folded ventrally on apical half, with extensive base ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ); articulated distal portion of phallus simple, elongate, more than two-thirds length of basal portion, with long apical bifurcate portion, basal process stout, about half length of articulated distal portion of phallus ( Fig. 41 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ). Female. Similar to male. Ovipositor ( Figs 44 and 45 View FIGURES 39 – 45 ): eighth segment short, about as long as wide; tergite 8 deeply cleft medially on distal margin; sternite 8 narrow, twice longer than wide.

Distribution. Costa Rica (Cartago, Heredia, San Jose, Puntarenas).

Remark. Some paratypes present the hind tibia yellow and the scutum has a wide shiny area, lacking pruinescence on the presutural region. The similarities of the male terminalia of this species with O. costaricensis sp. nov. was previously discussed in O. costaricensis sp. nov.. The male terminalia of O. falcata sp. nov. is also similar to that of Oropezella undulata sp. nov. They differ on the coloration of the scutum, yellow on presutural region and brown in the remaining portion of scutum in O. undulata sp. nov. and brown in O. falcata sp. nov.
