Oropezella granulosa View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 54–58 View FIGURES 54 – 58 , 117)

Diagnosis. Scutum entirely covered with yellow, scattered pruinescence; scutum pale brown to brown on postsutural region and yellow on presutural region, postpronotal lobe and notopleuron; mesopleuron pale brown on dorsal half and yellow on ventral half; coxae and trochanters pale yellow; femora and tibiae yellow; hind tibia darkened apically; tarsi pale brown except tarsomeres 1 and 2 of fore and midlegs yellow.

Etymology. From the Latin granum (seed, pellet), in reference to the granulated aspect of the left surstylus.

Description. Holotype male. Body: 2.5 mm. Wing: 2.2 mm. Head: antenna pale brown located slightly above middle of head; scape as long as pedicel; postpedicel conical, twice longer than wide, as long as scape and pedicel combined; stylus apical, bare and long, about three times length of antenna. Ocellar triangle weakly protuberant; 2 pairs of ocellar setae, anterior pair elongate, proclinate at 45º and posterior pair thin and short. Holoptic; frons long, more than two-thirds length of face. Proboscis yellow; palpus pale brown bearing 1 long apical and 1 shorter lateral bristle. Postcranium dark brown with reddish brown pruinescence; postoculars elongate, scattered, upper setae longest. Thorax: entirely covered with very thin, short, yellow scattered pruinescence; pronotum, scutellum and postsutural scutum pale brown to brown, presutural scutum, postpronotal lobe and notopleuron yellow, anepisternum, anepimeron and laterotergite pale brown, katepisternum, meron and mediotergite yellow. Bristles thin, short and scattered; acr and dc uniserial. Differentiated bristles: 2 npl (1 lower short and discreet and 1 long and robust above); posterior dc slightly longer than anterior dc, not obviously elongated; 1 postalar short and thin; 1 long and strong apical scutellar and 1 lateral weaker bristle and about two-thirds length of apical. Wing (Fig. 117): sub-hyaline with purple and golden iridescence; sub-hyaline with purple and golden iridescence; R1 meeting C before midlle of wing; cell dm emitting 2 veins; cell cu p present. Legs: coxae and trochanters pale yellow; femora and tibiae yellow; hind tibia darkened apically; tarsi pale brown, tarsomeres 1 and 2 of fore and midlegs yellow. Legs with weak bristles: mid tibia with 1A at middle and 1D near base; 1A rather strong near apex and some ventral elongated bristles on hind femur. Abdomen: tergites and sternites brown; shiny with pruinescence only on tergite 8. Bristles brown, short, scattered and thin. Terminalia: hypandrium about 1.5 times longer than wide with truncate apex ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 54 – 58 ); epandrium short, not deeply cleft dorsally, epandrial lamellae broadly fused ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 54 – 58 ); left epandrial lamella shorter than right, with dorsoapical process short and broad apically in dorsal view ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 54 – 58 ); right surstylus slightly shorter than left, base wider than apex, with small pointed process at middle of ventral margin ( Fig. 58 View FIGURES 54 – 58 ); left surstylus long, ventrally and inner curved with clavate apex, distal half covered by lumpy circular marks ( Fig. 57 View FIGURES 54 – 58 ); articulated distal portion of the phallus simple, elongate, more than two-thirds length of basal portion, with apical bifurcate portion long and basal process about one-third length of articulated distal portion of phallus ( Fig. 56 View FIGURES 54 – 58 ). Female. Unknown.

Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂, labelled: C.R [ COSTA RICA], Puntarenas / R.F. Golfo Dulce / 24km. W. Piedras / Blancas 200m / xi.[19]90, P. Hanson ( CNC) (in excellent condition, not dissected). Paratypes: COSTA RICA, Limón: 1♂, 16 km W. Guápiles, 400 m, iv.1989, col. P. Hanson ( INBIO CRI 0 0 1 107 185).

Distribution. Costa Rica (Limón, Puntarenas).

Remark. This species is similar to O. costaricensis sp. nov. on the basis of the left surstylus expanded distally with lumpy round marks on outer surface; however, in O. granulosa sp. nov. the round marks are over the half distal length of the surstylus (in O. costaricensis sp. nov. they are only on the apex of this structure), the ventral margin of the hypandrium is truncate (ventral margin of hypandrium is slightly convex in O. costaricensis sp. nov.) and the right surstylus is quite different between the species. Additionally, in O. granulosa sp. nov. the scutum is yellow on the presutural region and brown on the remaining scutum (entirely brown in O. costaricensis sp. nov.).
