Geographic distribution: Paraíba do Sul river basin.

Diagnosis: The 2 species of Harttia that occur in the area of study can be distinguished by the distribution of plates in front of the anus: Harttia carvalhoi is distinguished from H. loricariiformis by the absence of preanal plates ( Langeani et al. 2001).
