Head: Length of anterior fronto-orbital seta 0.6x posterior seta.

Wing: Costa ends at 8/9 of wing length. Angle between costa and R4+5 60°. Distance between radial fork and rm 5x length of r-m; dm-cu 2x length of r-m and distance between crossveins 1.7x dm-cu.

WIPs: Basal angle of distal spot acute, 55°.

Legs: Ventral surface of male mid tibia with a middle small seta, distally followed by a comb of smaller stout setae and a large apical seta; female mid tibia similar to male except without comb of small stout setae.

Male abdomen and terminalia: S5 with a pair of posteromedial lobes, lobes ventrally covered with medially directed spicules, dorsally rounded; a row of strong setae; row as long as modified posteromedial part of sclerite. Cercus short, apex slightly expanded. Surstylus ventrolaterally with thumb-like process and ventrally with smaller protuberance. Distiphallus LFS sheet-like; FDS form a posteriorly bent tongue; SDS weakly sclerotized.

Female abdomen and terminalia: S7 simple with 1 row of setae of alternating size on each half. Each half of T8 simple, without setae. S8 thin and wavy, with 4 setae. Etymology: This name refers to the abundance of this widespread species (Latin ‘abundantia’: abundance).

Comments: B. abundantia   is the most common species of the basal lineages, and has a remarkably wide range that extends from the southern tip of South America to the southwestern United States. It can be easily identified and differentiated from similar species by the shorter row of setae on S5 and the form of the male cercus. Male cerci of dried B. abundantia   speciemens are usually extended laterally but can sometimes be flexed inwards.
