32. Anisophyllea impressinervia Madani (1993: 53) View in CoL ( Figure 62 View FIGURE 62 )
Type:— MALAYSIA. Sabah: Kudat, Bengkoka Peninsula , ca. 1.6 km southeast of Kampong Bawing , 100 m, 11 September 1972, G . Shea & F . Minjulu 76094 (holotype SAN!, isotypes A, K-H2008/0021830!, L, SAR, SING) .
Trees to 26 m tall, 28 cm in diam.; out bark grey, rough and cracking irregularly, inner bark red to yellowishorange; sapwood pale-yellow; young branches glabrous, with protuberant glandular lenticels; buds nearly glabrous. Leaves dimorphic, internodes between similar types of leaves 0.6–2.0 cm, between two adjacent different types of leaves 2–8 mm; small leaves caducous, only leaving small scars on twigs; large leaves petiolate, petiole 3–4 mm long, 0.8–1.1 mm in diam., glabrous and sparsely glandular; leaf blade elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic, 4.5–6.0 cm long, 2–3 cm wide, base rounded to acute, apex bluntly acute, margins often slightly revolute, thickly chartaceous, dark yellowish-green adaxially, much paler abaxially, glabrous, sparsely glandular on both surfaces with protuberant and transparent glands 0.10–0.19 mm in diam., 0.25–2.00 mm distant; main longitudinal veins 5–7, springing from blade base, or with two innermost lateral veins from midrib at ca. 0.6 cm above blade base, outermost two lateral veins very fine and almost merged with blade margins, all main veins impressed adaxially and raised abaxially; transverse veins numerous, irregular; veinlets reticulate. Inflorescence and flowers unknown. Fruit a drupe, globose, 4.5–5.0 cm in diam., surface irregularly roughed when dried. Seed 1, ca. 1.5 cm long, 1.3 cm in diam.
Flowering and fruiting: —Flowering time unknown; fruiting in September.
Habitat and distribution: — Low land gully forests; ca. 100 m. Malaysia (Sabah) ( Figure 63 View FIGURE 63 ) .
Taxonomic notes: —When Anisophyllea impressinervia was published ( Madani 1993), it was compared with A. beccariana , but the latter has eglandular leaves and prominent transverse veins that make its venation pinnate-like. Anisophyllea impressinervia can be distinguished from A. globosa , a more similar species, by its main longitudinal veins all impressed adaxially as suggested by Madani (1995), by the more or less glabrous young branches and buds, and by its leaves most often blunt or rounded at both ends. However, both species are only known so far from their type specimens collected from very closely adjacent localities in Sabah, Malaysia. Information about floral characters of both species is lacking. Further investigations are necessary to clarify their identities.
